If you can tell somebody that a pill is fake and it still works, then w- what's, what's helping them? Like, they know that it's not the thing, right? Like, i- i- is something else contributing to this? Do you have any explanation of this?

Yeah, it's a great question, but I do think Ted Kaptchuk at Harvard has found that there are enduring effects for open label placebo, particularly for things like for irritable bowel syndrome, but I'll, I'll- I'm not sure.

Turns out it's not true.

Just a few years ago, Ted Kaptchuk at Harvard did this study where he brought in patients who had irritable bowel syndrome and he gave them a pill in a jar that said placebo on the label.

And he said, this is a placebo.

It is an inert substance that has been shown to help some people with the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
