so really quickly before we get into our list the lyric that we have in our title take you to the top is a rolling stones lyric from their song tops off of tattoo you this was their um 1981 album, it was their 16th album UK, 18th in the US.
Chris WinterHOST
10:02
One of my favorite Rolling Stone rare five-star album review, which is interesting because it was basically a bunch of outtakes from older albums.
Chris WinterHOST
10:09
We've talked about the Rolling Stones three other times on the podcast.
Chris WinterHOST
10:14
Episode 13, You Gotta Move off Sticky Fingers was our restless leg.
Chris WinterHOST
10:18
Could not resist using You Gotta Move for restless leg.
Chris WinterHOST
10:21
We talked about in episode 29, Snoring, and in the title was out of our heads which was the year their fifth album i believe and we used the um the song satisfaction because keith richards fell asleep while recording riffs for satisfaction and was snoring on the tape famously and then 32 was co-sleeping let's spend the night together so 1981 tattoo you start me up would be the Rolling Stones' last single to reach as high as number two.
Chris WinterHOST
10:56
Tattoo You was their last American number one album to date.
Dave SpositoHOST
15:37
And Dirty Work, Rolling Stones, 1986.
Dave SpositoHOST
15:40
I think that was the follow-up to Tattoo You, which was, like, early '80s.
Molly AllenHOST
15:48
Hmm.
Dave SpositoHOST
15:48
And that had Start Me Up on it, had Waiting For a Friend.
VincentGUEST
5:39
I remember I was 10 years old and I came in and there was always just stacks of records.
VincentGUEST
5:43
I came in and it was Rolling Stones, Tattoo You, album cover with the guy that tattoos all over his face.
VincentGUEST
5:49
I was like, mom, what is that? What is that? Because I already had family members who were in the military and some were bikers and those were the tattoo guys and nobody messed with those guys and so when i saw that i was like i want i want it i want that she's like promise me you'll never tattoo your face so i've kept my promise i came close i got a little upset when the guy went a little over my jawline but you know i've you know i've always know i wanted to be the guy that nobody messed with didn't mean i was you know necessarily the you know the the the psychopath or or the bad guy i just didn't want to be with and home wasn't safe and so i found safety in sports and wrestling became a state champion wrestler as a kid and skateboarding and got sponsored and then i was asked to tattoo when i was 16 and 16 year old hanging out in the hells angels mansions tattooing and starting a tattoo shop and just i was that all-american kid and and i kept finding myself in weird situations things got so bad at home when i was at 12 for me not everybody but for me and just i think i had lost trust you and i were talking a little bit before you know this this session and Is that what you call a YouTube or a podcast? You call it a session or what? I don't know.
VincentGUEST
7:11
But anyway, we were talking, we're talking about parental duties.
VincentGUEST
7:14
And I think my mom as hard as working as smart and kind and considerate as she was, she was just consumed with keeping a roof over the house over and roof over all of us and keeping food on the table.

Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?
Dylan StoneHOST

Now, The Rolling Stones were already massive by the time they made Tattoo You, but Bob Clearmountain came along and basically said, "Yeah, but let's make this thing sound expensive." Clearmountain mixed the album, giving tracks like Slave a huge polished punch without sanding off the Stones' attitude.
Dylan StoneHOST
40:09
And Slave is basically a groove that refuses to leave the building.
Dylan StoneHOST
40:13
Sax, percussion, Keith doing Keith things, and Mick sounding like he just discovered the studio has an emergency volume knob.
Dylan StoneHOST
40:21
That became part of the magic of Tattoo You.
Dylan StoneHOST
40:24
Old Stones performances rescued, reshaped, and turned into a blockbuster.
Dylan StoneHOST
40:29
Here's The Rolling Stones.
Jim FlorentineGUEST

What was my plan? I'm going to walk through the north central neighborhood alone at 930 at night in my flip flops and I'm going to walk because I can't get it over and I'm really mad.
Dave SpositoHOST
8:09
Rolling Stones again from Tattoo You, 1981.
Dave SpositoHOST
8:12
First song, right out of the chute, Start Me Up.
Molly AllenHOST
8:15
Oh, that's a good one.
JeffHOST
1:29
So that's a fun way to start the week.
JeffHOST
1:31

Vinnie PennHOST

You know, I remember buying Tattoo You.
Vinnie PennHOST
1:39
I love Can't Always Get What You Want.
Vinnie PennHOST
1:41
I love that one, Gimme Shelter.
Geoff HarknessGUEST
65:15
So it's such an interesting plot twist that somebody who spent a whole career writing these dark masterpieces about romance ends up finding the love of his life, and, uh, so cool, you know? So I love- Under the Aurora I think is as good as anything the band's ever done, and how often does that happen? You know, I mean, I love The Rolling Stones.
Geoff HarknessGUEST
65:36
They're one of my favorite bands, but their last great album was maybe, like, Tattoo You.
Geoff HarknessGUEST
65:40
I mean, it's been a long time, you know, since those guys have put out something that really held up as well as their earlier material.
Geoff HarknessGUEST
65:47
That's so often the case with bands.
