Thomas BeloeGUEST
22:42
I'm sure you're aware of as well, Vikash.
Thomas BeloeGUEST
22:45
There are initiatives that have begun to bear fruit, like the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure, which is an initiative that existed to ensure that central banks are working with others to fully comprehend the nature of climate-related risks for the financial system, related to that also the task force on nature-related financial risk disclosure.
Thomas BeloeGUEST
23:17
which is exactly the same, but looking at nature-related risks and what they pose to financial systems.
Thomas BeloeGUEST
23:23
And UNDP is very proud.
Sam HoushowerGUEST
19:52
And so in disclosure, I think there's sort of two key areas.
Sam HoushowerGUEST
19:55
There's, uh, we've seen, uh, uh, an incr- we've seen new laws requiring corporate-level disclosure, so that would be SB25, in California, SB253, the Climate, um, Corporate Data Accountability Act, which covers emissions disclosure, GHG emissions disclosure, and SB261, which is, uh, requires disclosure on climate-related risks and opportunities, um, along, uh, under a, uh, under a format, um, uh, uh, called TCFD, the, uh, Task Force on, um, uh, uh, Climate-related Financial Disclosure.
Sam HoushowerGUEST
20:29
Uh, and these, uh, and that format, um, also covers a number of things that we might not have think of as directly within the context of climate risk.
Sam HoushowerGUEST
20:39
It can cover targets and governance mechanisms, for example.
Brenda SargentGUEST
15:23
That's where we have a lot of our metrics and our voluntary reporting that we do.
Brenda SargentGUEST
15:28
So some of the templates that we report through, like our EEI, AGA, ESG template, that's a lot of acronyms, as well as the SASB report and our TCFD report.
Brenda SargentGUEST
15:40
And those, we're in the process of putting together our corporate responsibility and sustainability reports.
Brenda SargentGUEST
15:46
And I think those will be published within the next month or so to watch for those.
Anton GuineaHOST
2:06
I know, right? I was worried because that's a bit of a tongue twister.
Anton GuineaHOST
2:09
Through his consultancy, Dr Sridhar specialises in preparing organisations for emerging regulatory landscapes, including AASB S2, ISSB and TCFD aligned climate financial disclosures.
Anton GuineaHOST
2:24
I'm just going to put a what the fudge on that, but we'll come back to it and I'll get you to explain maybe some of that.
Anton GuineaHOST
2:28
His real world executive capabilities are anchored by his former leadership roles as GM of social responsibility and ESG reporting at Evolution Mining, which we love our mining companies in Australia.
Andrew MitchellGUEST
11:03
Well, ultimately, it does require regulation.
Andrew MitchellGUEST
11:06
And if you see what's happened with the TCFD, the Task Force on Climate, the UK was the first country to mandate that.
Andrew MitchellGUEST
11:12
And once it's mandated, then all companies have to do it.
Andrew MitchellGUEST
11:16
And so I wonder who will become the first country to mandate the TNFD on nature.
speaker_0HOST
15:34
Let's talk a bit more about the kind of disclosure and reporting aspect of TNFD, because, I mean, compliance can help get things on people's radars, but it doesn't always win those mindsets over.
speaker_0HOST
15:45
And actually, lots of our members, um, have fed back to us that they feel that there's a lot of sustainability reporting burden, um, that takes up a lot of time for them, whether that's, uh, TCFD reports, uh, stewardship code reports, you know, meeting other sort of standards as well.
speaker_0HOST
16:00
How do you see TNFD fitting into all of this?
Tony GoldnerGUEST
16:03
Yeah.
Tony GoldnerGUEST
16:03
Well, we've been very conscious about this from the beginning.
Tony GoldnerGUEST
16:06
The first decision of the task force was to basically build, as our name suggests, build directly on top of TCFD.
Tony GoldnerGUEST
16:12
So, um, we, we very quickly, I think in the first or second meeting of the task force back in 2021, we said, "If we don't need to change anything from TCFD, let's keep it, other than, you know, literally swapping out the word climate for nature.
Tony GoldnerGUEST
16:28
If those disclosures were still meaningful for investors, and they were still, they still work, then let's simply do a minimum word change." One of the things the market said to us is, "If you change words, that causes a huge amount of, uh, extra work and due diligence.
PatricioHOST
5:39
[laughs] Sustainability.
MiaHOST
5:41
Uh, yeah, no, so essentially, so we have the TCFD, which is all about, um, you know, climate risk, uh, which, uh, our dear Funny sit with, uh, quite a bit.
FannyHOST
5:50
Mm-hmm.
MiaHOST
5:50
And then we now have a nature risk-
MiaHOST
7:19
Uh, so what was then, uh, done is that they've created this task force for, uh, nature-related, uh, disclosures, because similarly to, uh, with climate, we need to also look at those because they constitute a lot of risks and opportunities, et cetera.
MiaHOST
7:32
Yes, Hanne? [laughs]
FannyHOST
7:34
So, uh, so what they did was that they used the original TCFD framework.
PatricioHOST
7:41
Uh-huh.
Lisa SachsGUEST
34:59
This was the, the, the most recent paper that I wrote in June was kind of how we've confused risk, different types of risk and how, and different responses to risk, and then what different institutions can do about that risk, I think with perverse outcomes.
Lisa SachsGUEST
35:11
And I think TCFD and some of those climate risk frameworks have fallen into that trap, which is risk management frameworks where...
Lisa SachsGUEST
35:19
Or risk disclosure frameworks where the...
Lisa SachsGUEST
35:22
At best, what a risk disclosure framework tells you is what are the risks so I can manage them, but they have been, um, pushed as a means to think that that risk management will build a system.
Dan WatsonGUEST
29:02
As a reminder, USF is not currently required to comply with the UK sustainability disclosure requirements, but hopefully provide sufficient data for any investor who would wish to categorize USF under their own sustainability labeling.
Dan WatsonGUEST
29:18
Finally, we'll be updating the company's TCFD disclosures in the next annual report.
Dan WatsonGUEST
29:24
And with that, I'll hand back over to Tom.
Tom ShaughnessyGUEST
29:28
That's great.
Sarah MukherjeeGUEST
18:45
And so some of this, some of the action that we see in businesses is being driven by shareholders, by philanthropic donors.
Sarah MukherjeeGUEST
18:55
If you're in the not for profit space, they will be asking some by regulation to TCFD, TNFD.
Sarah MukherjeeGUEST
19:03
is driving some of the action as well.
Sarah MukherjeeGUEST
19:05
I do think, and I do think that we have not done what we could do on this as sustainability professionals.
