Tarquin Gotch

So that band, Yello, was a pretty obscure Swiss synth pop band, and the song was not a hit when the movie was made.

The way it ended up in the scene was that Yello's manager happened to know John Hughes' music supervisor, a guy named Tarquin Gotch.

Now, a music supervisor is someone who helps craft the soundtrack for a film, but at this point in the mid-'80s, it wasn't a very clearly defined role yet, so we'll go into more detail about that job later on.

But right now I'm gonna play you a clip from a short documentary about the song Oh Yeah.

So this clip is Yello's manager talking about a conversation he had with Tarquin Gotch, the music supervisor, and Tarquin is telling him about a movie that he's working on.

Tarquin was saying, "Yeah, we've got an interesting soundtrack, but we've got this really important scene.

It's kind of the high point of the movie, and we just can't get it." And I was like, "You know what you need? You need some electronic music." [laughs]

John loves it.
