[laughs] It's like the fetchlands, right? It's like when they start putting fetchlands in, you know it's a bad set, right? You know they gotta sell this somehow, so-

so-I, I'm like, "Okay, okay." Like, I don't care for nostalgia bait, you know? Like, I don't know why they had to try out Tarmogoyf at Mythic.

And Tarmogoyfs are about $10 these days.

So you get a Tarmogoyf for next to nothing.

And look at the rest of the cards in this deck.

It's Burn with Nakano and

Tarmogoyf.

Dude, when WotC decided to color shift Tarmogoyf and lop a mana off of it, so that way blue and black are the color of big creatures, it bodes very well for the community formats like this one, where now Tarmogoyfs are very accessible.

Yeah, I think that's the real point of this episode is that there are so many cards that are playable in this format that we love, that we just miss playing, right? Like Tarmogoyf, Bob, you know, Vidalcan Shackles.

You're trying to have different kinds of things.

But then you're removing it, so that actually doesn't make sense because you're-

I think you have to have that.

Yeah, I think the days of killing you over four turns with a Tarmogoyf are long gone because that is just not a very viable plan.

Psychic Frog sort of plays that role in that over four turns, the frog is going to accumulate enough cards that I'm going to be able to still continually stop what you're doing or it builds to something bigger where maybe you do Gorios them or you Ephemerate a Riddler or something, but...

From the events that I played with Gorios, which is like an RC and a decent amount of RCQs and whatnot, I wasn't killing people with Gorios every round.

Uh, basically, the constraint of this cube is they wanted, they wanted the, uh, power band to be set at, um...

There was, like, this thing in, like, 2010s Magic where there's, like, this cycle of really powerful two-drops, um, which were Tarmogoyf, Snapcaster Mage, Dark Confidant, Stoneforge Mystic, Young Pyromancer.

This was sort of like the, this, like, cycle kind of that the designers didn't really intend of, like, really strong, eternal, playable two-drops, and that's sort of, like, the vibe that the designer of Heather cube wanted to set for this, for this format.

So it is playing a lot of cards from, um, like, the early 2010s.

And, you know, if we rewind threats, the expectations on threats weren't quite as high.

You know, there was there was a long time when Tarmogoyf was in the cube and it was fine, you know, never really great.

But, you know, you put it out and, you know, all of a sudden you've got a four or five or five, six or something for your two man.

And you think, OK, that's a pretty good threat.

Why not? Okay, sure.

Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, create a Tarmogoyf token.

I remember talking at the time when this was spoiled.

It's like one of the, like the first big, super expensive standard cards that impacted every format was Tarmogoyf.

Yeah.

And a star slash star plus one creature for two that's power and toughness equal to the number of card types in your graveyard.

Printed so that they could tease the existence of Planeswalkers.
