like His Shotgun Stories and Take Shelter are two of my favorite movies of that era, and they're because of Michael Shannon and the Jeff Nichols pairing.

And the whole movie takes

place in Chicago, so you know they had to cast Big Chicago

I would say now that we've gotten 20 years of Michael Shannon doing the Michael Shannon thing over and over again to the point that now he's kind of not really doing the Michael Shannon thing anymore.

It helped me with the character a little bit because the mania of a Michael Shannon character in, say, Take Shelter or Midnight Special is like it's very purposeful and productive, can be delusional, but can also be justified.

And so he kind of brings a sort of integrity.

There is integrity to some Michael Shannon characters, and I feel like that's what he's trying to bring.

And having Jessica Chastain involved in this is brilliant.

She has played such fierce protective mothers in the past in films like Take Shelter or The Tree of Life.

Subverting her maternal image adds layers of dread to the project.

It really does cap off this idea that in 2026, Hollywood wants us looking over our shoulders, double-checking the locks in our own living rooms.

Yeah, now we do shit like Take Shelter, speaking of Michael Shannon, where you're like, oh, he's special, but it's fucked up.
