The most recent execution was in June twenty twenty-five, when the Justice Ministry approved the hanging of Takahiro Shiraishi.

Shiraishi was sentenced to death for crimes including robbery, rape, and the murders of nine people in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, in twenty seventeen.

His execution was the first in two years and eleven months, the longest gap since the government began announcing executions and releasing related data in November nineteen ninety-eight.
