Taiwanese Hokkien

And just for people listening who don't have that context, my grandmother, who I believe was born in the 30s.

She grew up speaking Japanese and she didn't speak Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien was her like mother tongue as well.

My parents were told when they grew up, they were encouraged to speak Mandarin and they know Hokkien, but they were told that they would one day return to China and Taiwan would be returned to China.

And then my friends in Taiwan who grew up in Taiwan don't identify with Japan or China at all.

And Hakka is where I grew up, and that's from my father's side.

And my mother's side speaks Taiwanese Hokkien.

And so I grew up listening to both languages, but both languages don't have a written system.

And afterwards, everyone was asked to learn English at an early age, like kindergarten age or elementary school age.
