You know, I posted about buying that $1,600 PSA 2 Christy Mathewson T206.

What an amazing card though, you know? But leading up to the National and at the National, I felt like I just...

I, I got overwhelmed with, like, sports cards.

[chuckles]

You know? Sports cards started taking over, and I was like, "Oh," and, uh, and then, like, the moment I realized I can own a T206 card, especially Christy Mathewson, it was like tunnel vision.

That, like, my whole mindset was just right there.

And then I'm sitting back, you know.

They were the start of a hobby that would grow into a billion dollar industry.

Later, we'll be joined by Andy Broom, vice president of CGC Cards and a veteran grader who's handled everything from vintage Japanese baseball to the legendary T206 Hannes Wagner.

But first, let's uncover the story behind Scraps Tobacco.

There's something about the mysteries of the hobby that keep me up at night.

There is one card that eludes me.

I have not graded a Baltimore News Babe Ruth yet, but I've got pretty much everything else squared away.

To me, it's the T206 Wagner, but not because it's a T206 Wagner.

To me, the reason why that was so special and it was such a unique situation was how it went down.

Okay.

And some of the older, older pitchers, right? From the T206 time, they were also Some of the greatest of all time.

I think it's very tough when Nolan Ryan was not even the greatest pitcher on any year that he ended up pitching for him to be one of the five most iconic pitchers in hobby love.

I just don't see that happening in a decade or two decades from now.

You don't have to grade it and people can have – like you stamp it.

Like people back in the day used to stamp their T206 cards.

Yeah.

with their own little insignias and stuff like that, we should serial number the cards in our collections so that people can have the card from so-and-so's collection and it's the only one.

We've read about in the past.

It's that the reason the Honus Wagner car, the T206 specifically, Tom, the reason it's so valuable is that there are precious few, that there weren't that many of them.

And yet...

I don't know, once every six months I'm reading a new story about somebody uncovering this T-206 Honus Wagner that's worth millions of dollars.

The latest reads as follows.

The Taft administration selling for more than most people will earn in several lifetimes.

An extremely rare Honus Wagner T206 card just sold for $5.856 million.

And the advertisement put on the back is the major reason that this copy sits in its own absurd corner of the card collecting hobby.

If I start moving some stuff, it usually is with one goal in mind, and that is to either fund a trip to a card show or buy some big card that I've been searching for for a while.

Mention the Rue Bois Del T206 on last week's show.

That was kind of, like I said, how I acquired that.

I moved off a few things that I just didn't see myself keeping long term and went out and got my first T206 tobacco card of a Hall of Famer, which I'd been looking for a nice copy for a long time.

So in the next year, as usual, I want to add some key, just key single cards for the collection.

I want to keep making sure I'm getting new stuff of a lot of the new hockey rookies and the new baseball rookies.

But there's been a big influx of Wagners, T206 Wagners, throughout the hobby.

Everybody's been auctioning off one for some reason.

But...

Yeah, go ahead.

Joe, I want to talk about some of the vintage cards.

You know, we always talk about the 33 Gaudis, the Roots, the Gehrigs, the T206.

What are some of the more underrated vintage cards right now at this snapshot in time?

Well, the most advanced collectors 50 years ago were collecting T206s.

The T206 is only a set because Jefferson Burdick said it was.

So before Jefferson Burdick was out there, people did collect a lot by the backs because they were almost like separate sets.

They were separate tobacco companies.

By the way, one thing, and I noticed it was kind of sort of referred to in the chat.

When I first started in the organized hobby, there were three cards considered to be grails.

The T206 Wagner, the 33 Gaudi La Joie, which is released actually in 34, and the 52 Mantle.

There was a note in the comments that a PSA 8 mantle sold last night in the same auction for about $3.1 million, if I remember the post correctly.

We'll start here with this recognizable card.

This is known as the Honus Wagner T206.

They're, um-

That's it

And, um, there are less than 80 of them known in the, in the world.

And, uh, they stopped producing them.

The T206 was produced from 1909 to 1911, and these were only, only a handful of these were produced in 1909 and made it into the, the tobacco packaging.

And so what's interesting about this one, this, in the current auction, it's closing tonight.
