One of the papers I read when I started my PhD program in Berkeley was a classic paper from 1975 called "The End-to-End Argument in System Design." It's a fascinating paper.

It basically says something like, if you have any kind of distributed system, and whether you want to do encryption or security, you need to solve this at the edges of the system, at the ends.

You cannot solve it in the pipes.
