System of record

Um, we just ignored all of that.

We were like, "Look, we, we need to figure this out." You know, and I think to, to the team's credit we all sort of realized together, hey, the only play in this space that we would all be excited to spend the next 10 years of our lives on would be to like go and reinvent the system of record.

Where does that come from? Like how do you get to that conclusion?

Yeah.

Okay.

Um, we're like we need to own and index proprietary data, no question.

Second, we're like look, we're productivity tool people, you know? And I think we all got excited about the technical challenge of building, you know, an agentic system of record.

We're like, this sounds super hard.

I think Anthropic has seen a real opportunity, though, Because if you think about right now, what is their data source for the most part? The data source is the internet and the data that they have in their models.

So they're starting to recognize that in business, the real data are those systems of record that you talked about.

And systems of record have historically been...

I have the weirdest thing going on.

Yeah, boy, today has been the 9-11 of technology, that's for sure.

So anyway, the point being is, hey, the systems of record have... historically been underutilized, undertapped.

You had Sabre, remember that? Airport travel agency stuff.

Remember that? And they decided, hey, we'll give System of Record, and we'll become that, and we'll give it away to Travelocity and Expedia.

Look how that turned out.

So these guys that think they're just going to be System of Record, in my mind, they're gone.

It's the database.

The database is the system of record.

It's the one place where truth lives and everything else is a derivative.

For this inventory app, you need an items table: id, name, sku, quantity, description, timestamps, and something like is active for soft deletes.

It tells you something is wrong.

That's the handoff.

You build the database first because it's the system of record.

You build the ORM next because it's the bridge between your code and the database.

Okay.

I mean, what you're basically saying, I'll cliff note it here for you, right? What you're basically saying is, hey, we have systems of record like LeadSmart and CRM and so forth and ERP.

The ability to leverage those systems of record in a much more meaningful, productive, and intelligent way compared to, hey, running a couple of reports, which is basically the only way you can leverage a system of record before is run some report or maybe a BI tool or some dashboards or things like that.

But you really didn't get the insights and the strategy and so forth.

So the ability to leverage systems of record continues to go up.

And yes, if there's a way to... to enable them, enable our people, and that's what we're doing a lot with, to leverage the system of record better, to do a better job and to be able to grow and increase growth and so forth.

I mean, you could argue that says, hey, we've got a five-person inside sales team.

So l- let's actually talk about that.

Um, this concept of taking, you know, from, from ERP as a system of record to ERP as a system of work, where traditional ERPs, they're storing the financial data, but the humans are s- the humans are still working with the data, right? Around the reconciliations that you talked about-
