Switchmen and track workers worked around enormous pieces of machinery, which was pretty much the perfect storm for accidents.

Accidents that can mean crushed limbs, devastating injuries, permanent disability, or death.

Awesome.

Why exactly was that?

Well, there had been an ongoing strike of switchmen.

Switchmen are the railroad workers who are responsible for putting freight cars on various trains, and they had been on strike for months.

And so there were instances of missed deliveries, and that happened in this case.

There was a shipment of coal that should have been delivered to Wellington two days before the snowstorm started that somehow never got up there.
