Kevin TurnerHOST
32:07
so I'm quite pleased we've gone back there.
Kevin TurnerHOST
32:09
Um, but calling it Bahrain Grand Prix, but you know, we've had the, we've had the Swiss Grand Prix in France in the past, so, you know, whatever.
Kevin TurnerHOST
32:14
Um, so yeah-
Stuart CodlingGUEST
32:14
Didn't cut the mustard at Dijon.
Kunal ShahHOST
31:52
That's why it was San Marino Grand Prix in Imola.
Kunal ShahHOST
31:55
Then the Swiss Grand Prix was held in France at Dijon.
Soumil AroraHOST
32:01
Yes.
Kunal ShahHOST
32:02
Okay.
Kunal ShahHOST
32:03
Then the Luxembourg Grand Prix has been held at the Nürburgring.
Kunal ShahHOST
32:08
Yes.
Kunal ShahHOST
32:09
But when we look at distances the swiss the swiss grand prix in dijon was say 190 kilometers from bern which is you know in switzerland or when you look at san marino it's about 120 kilometers but when you look at sepang in malaysia and the sakir circuit in bahrain it's 6040 kilometers away
Soumil AroraHOST
32:32
That's the anomaly.
CaesarHOST
52:49
Yeah.
LukeHOST
52:49
The Swiss, the Swiss Grand Prix was, uh, done in Dijon-Perrigneys, uh, in France, 1982, 'cause Swiss had banned motor racing after that, um, uh, really big crash.
LukeHOST
53:01
And the Luxembourg Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring in Germany from '97 to '98.
LukeHOST
53:07
So I think it's interesting that that's happened a, a couple of times.
KathrynHOST
7:37
But then we also have two Luxembourg Grands Prix in 1997 and 1998 that took place in Germany.
KathrynHOST
7:43
And then we had the 1982 Swiss Grand Prix that was contested in France.
KathrynHOST
7:48
France.
KathrynHOST
7:49
But this is going to be the 22nd running of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Edd StrawHOST
1:50
I don't really like it because I do think that the name of a Grand Prix should be based on where it is.
Edd StrawHOST
1:56
I know we've had a few cases, your Luxembourg Grand Prix, when the Swiss Grand Prix was at Dijon.
Edd StrawHOST
2:02
Imola of course San Marino Grand Prix but they were pretty close so this is stretching a point we know why it's happening it's because Bahrain can't host the Grand Prix in Bahrain so they're still basically putting it on so I think for the wider world it's a little bit odd because it should be dictated by where you are but to be fair we were at the track today and they're certainly trying to give it a proper Bahrain vibe aren't they?
Jon NobleGUEST
2:26
Yeah, I was sceptical about all the naming and I can understand things like the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola in Italy made total sense and the Swiss Grand Prix at Dijon and why the Nürburgring had its various races.
Jon NobleGUEST
2:39
But this just seemed like a... almost illogical to have a race so far apart to have the name, even though we understood the reasons.
Jon NobleGUEST
2:47
But having been there today and having in this build-up to the race debating, is it going to feel like the Malaysian Grand Prix but have a different name? Are we going to kind of be force-fed that you need to call this the Bahrain Grand Prix and all that sort of constant messaging? But having gone there, it actually feels like the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia that we've bumped into before.

20 MINS LATER

Edd StrawHOST
23:36
We've talked about the reasons why the race is here, the global political situation, the uncertainty, obviously the fun.
Edd StrawHOST
23:43
Even though I don't like the fact that it's the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, I do love an anomaly.
Declan QuigleyGUEST
17:58
But the idea that it's the Bahrain Grand Prix, I mean, it's not entirely without Priest in motor racing history, is it? I mean, I remember the...
Declan QuigleyGUEST
18:06
Keke Rosberg winning an incredibly closely contested Swiss Grand Prix at Dijon in France in 1982.
Declan QuigleyGUEST
18:12
His only Grand Prix victory that year, actually, but he won the title.
Declan QuigleyGUEST
18:17
We've had a few like that, haven't we, over the years? Actually, during the 1980s, there was extensive speculation that there would be an Irish Grand Prix in Donington Park, and it didn't come to pass, but Tom Wheatcroft, who owned Donington Park, Got on well with Bernie Eccleston, was pushing like mad to get a Grand Prix, but obviously Silverstone was locked in.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
79:30
Nürburgring, not too far away from the border with Luxembourg.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
79:36
The Dijon-Prenois track in France hosted the Swiss Grand Prix in 1982, which is also interesting because Switzerland famously had a... like half a century, maybe longer, ban on racing after Le Mans in the 50s, after the catastrophic race that happened there.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
79:58
I don't know if some Swiss drivers were involved or maybe they just, you know, I mean, Switzerland's kind of weird.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
80:04
So maybe they were just like, no, no, we can't have this barbaric stuff happening here.
