Swing Time

He discovered a new hemisphere, and we celebrate the occasion by discovering in Ginger Rogers a new star.

It's true that Ginger has appeared in many pictures.

She's the young woman of Fort Worth who came to the screen in Young Man of Manhattan.

As a singer and dancer, she has few, if any, equals.

Playing opposite Ginger is Warren Williams.

When a youngster, Warren was the dashing hero who laughed at onrushing locomotives and snarling villains and consistently rescued lovely ladies in the early serial films.

Graduating to the stage, he returned to pictures, played Julius Caesar for me in Cleopatra, and will be seen next in Go West, Young Man.

He performs tonight in the role of Ronald Phillips.

The difference is they can control us neurologically, make us think anything, make us do anything, make us act any way, make us s- uh, see anything in our mind's eye that they want, and we cannot do that to them.

Uh, I, I, I just think that, uh, I, I'm a gr- I'm a great, uh, uh, um, as I said before, a great, uh, believer in, or great fan of the Great American Songbook, and, uh, this was from Swing Time, um, uh, which came out in 1936.

And, uh, it's just, uh, Fred Astaire was a great, a great, great singer.

He, he was, uh, um ...

So Top Hat.

I feel like s- uh, that, like for instance, on the AFI list they have Swing Time, and I feel like that's not as good as Top Hat.

In my opinion.

I, I don't know.

I'd have to rewatch a lot of these movies, 'cause now I don't know which one [laughs] I, like, which one I would think is better, but, like, oh, they-

I only gave Swing Time-

So-

I gave Swing Time two stars.

Together, they cranked out one hit after another.

Top Hat, Swing Time, Follow the Fleet, Shall We Dance.

These weren't just successful movies.

They were cultural events.

Too soon and once we've grown, we disdain the simple joys we've known.

And yet what wouldn't we give if we could get away from it all and behave like two small uninhibited babes in the woods? Just like children, we too are reading springtime together in Central Park.

Let's be children, it's riding the swing time, an old-fashioned life.

Got a quarter, let's buy a balloon now and see it soon.

So this week I'm just gonna say, uh, film recommendation, something I watched earlier in the year.

It was on Movie Week last year, Swing Time, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

It is very good.

There is one scene in particular that has aged very poorly, but other than that, it's a great film.

Yeah.

The Way You Look Tonight from Swing Time.

Ah, well.

The way you wear your hat, the way you sip your tea.

Yes.

[laughs] Swing Time and Fred Astaire.

Fred Astaire.

Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

[laughs]

Hello, everyone, and welcome to Once Upon a Time at the Oscars.

The show that helps you realize whether you have tinnitus.

I'm Kyle.

I'm sure it's a movie you and I are gonna be talking about a good bit when it does release.

Yeah.

So if you've enjoyed us talking about The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, even mentioning Swing Time, uh, which we haven't covered here, uh, definitely worth your time-

Yeah
