The Bob Webster recommendation was to plant my sweet peas in September, but due to repairs and construction, I wouldn't be able to put them in until November.

Is that too late?

No, you're just fine.

Realize that sweet peas are normally cold hardy or normally winter hardy.

But if we go from being very warm to suddenly very cold, you could get some cold damage.

So I think you'd be fine to plant them in November, but be prepared to cover them if we get any sudden severe drops in temperatures.

Good.

Well, here at home, I've been clearing the house a bit.

I've been doing a few tip runs because crikey, sweet pea, I have some of your stuff from when you were knee height of a grasshopper.

And I don't know, I held, well, I do know I held on to it in the first instant because I wondered if I might have another, another little sweet pea.

Another, you say? In which case, no point throwing all that out.

And then later on, I thought, well, I'll hand it down to various people, but everybody kept having boys.

But that's where they are, so that's an old wives' tale.

Yeah.

Anyway, sweetie, in other news, Monty Don has announced his retirement from Gardner's World, sweet pea.

It's not too late to plant sweet pea.

Sweet pea is a tender name we give folks we care for, mostly children.

When I posted the blog version, I included a photo of Grant as a baby in a pea costume.

He's the son of one of my associate gardeners, and he is the cutest thing.

He's now 10 or 11, I think.

Such a sweet pea.

Um, but anyway, we, we may, this heat may carry on and carry on.

Um, speaking of gardens, by the way, and that lovely autumnal change, we have a video from Tim Metcalf-Kemp, who is the head gardener at Easton Wold Gardens in Lincolnshire, [gasps] love a Wold garden, where they are sweet pea specialists.

He showed us how to harvest your sweet pea seeds for replanting.

So I'm Tim Metcalf-Kemp, and I'm the head gardener here at Easton Wold Gardens.

So today, we're gonna start harvesting our sweet peas, uh, which is earlier than usual.

So, but we can start to see that some of these now, we've got amongst the green seed pods, which aren't ripe, we have these nice straw brown pods, uh, which we can almost hear rattle.

Uh, they're ready for p- picking, so we're gonna start harvesting today.

Uh, then you can shell the peas, the seed from the pod.

But sweet peas are mildly toxic if eaten in excess, so I'd stay clear.

Lathyrus latifolius, called perennial sweet pea, everlasting pea, or pea vine, is native to Europe and escaped from gardens.

You see it blooming all along the roads during the summer.

Unlike its annual relative, it has no scent.

The annual sweet pea enchants us with delicate fragrance and beautiful bouquets.

But neither are the peas we should be having for supper.

Isn't it funny how sweet pea became a term of endearment? You may recall sweet pea as the baby found on Popeye's doorstep, whom Popeye adopts and calls boy kid.

Hey, sweet pea, why not plant edible peas you can safely eat? And so here we are 11 years later, and I'm taking my own advice.

They will star alongside Hudson Williams, Connor Story, Justice Smith, and Charlie Gillespie.
