I'm calling in because I used to manage a chain of pawn shops up in Butte and Sutter counties, and we dealt quite a bit in everything from gold jewelry up to gold bullion, as well as placer gold people would pan themselves.

And what struck me all the time was the unrealistic expectations that folks had about the value of their gold.

And it was really hard for people to understand that every time they go to cash that gold in, every time it changes hands, somebody's going to try to get a few dollars out of that.

and I think he planned to be a farmer the better part of his life and spend his career around there, but he made the mistake of joining the army in 1848 and had been in the army only a short time when he was transferred to San Francisco.

And great-grandfather was a pretty good letter writer and diary keeper, and he was in San Francisco when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1849, and it's quite clear that it was his intention to desert the army and pan for gold in 1849.

But he did not succeed in this because his unit was transferred again, and this time up to Oregon, and the unit was transferred by ship.

And as they were coming up the coast, just off of what is now the border between Oregon and California, but in Oregon territory, the ship was wrecked, and all but seven were drowned.
