Reasonable.

What does that actually mean to be reasonable? Because we need to understand how Section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is applied to those new surveillance technology that's being used by police force, like automated license plate readers, bodycams, and those new drones used as first responders as announced by the Calgary Police.

So if we look at those ALPR cameras, if you don't know what the AL- ALPR camera is, those are the Flock cameras.

In Canada, they're called Genetec.

We know that the end result is 1984, even worse than 1984, because there's no way that George Orwell, when he released his book in 1948, could have predicted the cell phones, could have predicted the AI technology, the drones, the cameras that are installed everywhere.

But this is how it becomes, how we become 1984.

Uh, Chris H. is saying, "Or another way to say it, our charter rights were not designed to foresee or take into account the invasive power of law enforcement surveillance technology." That is exactly what my point is.

Thank you for saying it like that in layman's terms, but that is exactly what I was saying.

If this is as bad as it gets, then this is very good news.

[page flipping] Surveillance operations.

These cases include threat actors from China, Iran, and West Africa, as well as the commercial surveillance for hire market and range from operations carried out by a single individual to entire teams.

And they did it in violation of the terms of service.

Big Pharma is pushing a Zempik into kids.

And we have more evidence of mass surveillance abuse.

So let's get after it.

All right, one last subject that I want to get to.

I've got two stories for it.

And this is on the surveillance systems that we're seeing.

Because in the state of Michigan, the flock cameras are not enough.

Against all logic, the tube came alive, painting the shadows with a lurid living glow.

The screen showed Surveillance, North Chamber, East Vault, Junction 7, all empty or so it seemed.

Sophia leaned in.

I pressed another key.

It just happens that they built out that digital system already.

The social credit, Sesame Credit, as they have in China, the facial recognition, the social media apparatus surrounding this, and now we have all these massive corporations Surveillance moves in Canada kill switches.

We've done videos on this, which can shut off your ability to use the internet.

We have, of course, mass surveillance across the board and them being able to listen in to what you do on a daily basis, determine what kind of prices you'll pay at grocery stores, determined by whether you say bad things about the government or not, or what race you are, or what gender you are, or what age you are.

Today, we are following one piece of hardware bolted to a pole and the questions it raises about who gets to watch an entire community without ever asking permission.

Flock safety did not begin as a symbol of a surveillance state.

It began in 2017, in Atlanta, as a small camera company founded to help a single gated neighborhood catch a string of burglaries.

The idea was simple, and on its own terms, effective.

The system flags a match automatically, and only then does a human being get involved.

Neighborhoods and small police departments adopted the technology quickly.

For the first time, communities without large budgets could gain something that once belonged only to cities with expensive surveillance infrastructure.

The company grew from a handful of cameras into a national network now used in more than 6,000 communities across 49 states.

These individuals, who are located around the world, bring a variety of experiences and expertise to their work, helping us to understand a range of issues.

One of these fellows is Jake Laparuk, who is also the deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology's Security and Surveillance Project.

Last week, Jake spoke to Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, and the ongoing efforts to reform it.

So we're going to talk today primarily about FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, specifically the warrantless provision of FISA, FISA Section 702.
