I do believe that Democrats are unified because we are hearing the pain, uh, in the voices of our constituents who are treading water.

The SNAP program is a critical lifeline for tens of millions of Americans throughout our country and specifically 2.9 New Yorkers.

Every day, SNAP benefits make it possible for working families to afford to put food on the table.

And more than half of those who receive SNAP are families with children and more than a third have elderly or disabled family members.

Without SNAP, many families would not be able to count on their next meal.

For decades, SNAP has prevented people from going hungry and saved countless lives.

But now, this administration is attempting to use this program as a tool in their cruel and chaotic targeting of immigrants.

It is outrageous.

Governor Abigail Spanberger announced the rollout of a more secure EBT card meant to prevent fraud in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Virginia is one of five states using new cards equipped with chips, which are considered more secure.

Families that use SNAP benefits will begin receiving new cards in the mail this fall.

know Republicans and Democrats take SNAP and TANF and all those things, not just only Democrats taking those services? Okay, but the

politician usually says to their supporters that I'm going to find ways to direct a disproportionate share of public resources to you.

I

understand there's some changes being made to the federal SNAP program, including how much counties have to contribute to the program.

Are there things you'd like to see the state step up to help out with some of the changes in SNAP?

The SNAP changes out of the HR1 bill are slowly being rolled out, so we're not seeing the full effect immediately.

It's kind of that saying, like the frog boiling in a pot of water.

So not only are we seeing more and more people losing access to SNAP benefits, which is basically just dollars to buy food at a grocery store, We're also seeing a cost shift from the federal government paying a significant amount of the administrative money and they're pushing it onto states.

Here in the state of New York, we are very concerned about where the funding is going to come from to ensure that people who are eligible for SNAP have access to and connection and are utilizing SNAP resources.

It's a huge cost burden for the state, but the state is capable of taking on that expense.

But the current government isn't going to provide it.

But there's also a pernicious connection between corporate food and the government in as much as SNAP and food stamps basically subsidize us.

And of course, Trump is cutting that down.

Poor people are being punished, and particularly they're losing their health care along with losing their food stamps.

But poor people can't.

Right.

But I mean, the problem for me is not SNAP and food stamps.

What I thought you were going to say is that, you know, one of the things I wrote about was infant formula and the absence of strict regulation of infant formula.

a Dominican national unlawfully residing in Massachusetts who allegedly used a stolen identity to obtain approximately $65,521 in SNAP and MassHealth benefits.

Some defendants allegedly lived under stolen identities in the United States for decades.

All of them were collecting taxpayer funded benefits under President Trump.

It's been just over a year since the passage of a Republican-backed reconciliation bill that made deep cuts to federal funding for food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP.

According to the Nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than 18,000 Mainers lost eligibility, including about 5,000 children.

Food insecurity experts say new requirements have made it harder to apply for aid, and as Michael Livingston reports, some individuals and families are now going without critical grocery money.
