Supersessionism

mean, that's a pretty common feudal refutation that you hear.

Supercessionism is the technical term for it and the theological term, and it's gained a lot of traction.

This doctrine suggests that because Israel rejected Christ, God rejected Israel, and that the church is now the new Israel, and we are the recipient of the blessings and all that was promised to Israel.

Now, there's a couple of problems with that.

It sounds to me like this pastor friend who's arguing for supersessionism.

And let me explain and define some terms because that may be new to some of our listeners.

Supersessionism is saying that the church has succeeded the role that Israel had.

And so sometimes you will hear a replacement theology that the church has replaced Israel.

Now those who teach supersessionism, they prefer the term fulfillment theology that we have fulfilled their promises given to Israel and that we are the new Israel.

Joel Webben identifies as a hyper-supercessionist.

They're saying one of the worst things is Judeo-Christian, when it should just be Christian.

And they're going to use a lot of claims from either the Bible, you know, you brood of vipers, synagogue of Satan, and then they're going to make claims from the Talmud, what the Talmud apparently says about Yeshua, or what Jews can do or not do, not recognizing that the Talmud has opinions on many different topics, many different subjects, and Obviously, these people are failing on the issue of Israel, but I think way too many people in the Messianic community want to avoid these kinds of matters because they're hoping that the situation is going to blow over when actually it's going to get more intense.

Now here is where the episode gets genuinely interesting, and where I want to give Professor Levine real credit, because the honest version of this story is more interesting than the cheap one.

In twenty twenty-two she published an academic article titled Supersessionism: Admit and Address Rather Than Debate or Deny.

And her argument is not what you'd expect from a scholar defending Judaism against Christian claims.

She argues that several New Testament texts genuinely do teach what Christians have historically called supersessionism, the idea that the church has replaced ethnic Israel as God's covenant people.
