Jay KriegerHOST

And so, you know, I covered Unhinged the previous week, and now I'm covering a game that I think, you know, is from an even bigger developer and really one of those things that you would expect Netflix to want to have because of the fact that it's going to hopefully push this merger of utilizing traditional game experiences with then your phone as the controller and also the interactive aspects of gameplay that you could have your phone be the function of.
Jay KriegerHOST
26:28
And that would be The Conjuring Unspoken, which is from Supermassive Games.
Jay KriegerHOST
26:32
So, you know, Supermassive, they're known for these interactive fiction games and which we've, you know, at this point covered any number of over the years.
Jay KriegerHOST
26:43
I think that...
Jay KriegerHOST
26:45
For me, what I've always appreciated about supermassive games is the fact that they have always strived to explore different subgenres of horror.
Jay KriegerHOST
26:59
And, you know, narratively speaking, right, they've kind of had this familiar framework of you get this big cast of characters and then you have to make difficult decisions that can impact who survives by the end of the experience, you know, all the way from until dawn.
Jay KriegerHOST
27:13
the dark picture anthologies, the quarry and whatnot.
Edward JonesHOST
0:24
Tonight, we once again look at video game adjacent properties as we check out the film adaptation of Until Dawn.
Edward JonesHOST
0:33
Obviously, if you're a long-time listener of the show, you know we are a fan of Until Dawn and the Supermassive Games series, which has now become the Dark Pictures anthology.
Edward JonesHOST
0:44
So...
Edward JonesHOST
0:45
There was some excitement in having an Until Dawn adaptation come out.

29 MINS LATER

Edward JonesHOST
30:05
That got a hell of a jump out of me.
Edward JonesHOST
30:08
But I've always put The Descent 2 as being a far superior film to The Descent 1.
Edward JonesHOST
30:14
I'm always surprised when I play the Supermassive Games and Until Dawn, just how effective they are though.
Edward JonesHOST
30:21
and creating the tension.
Mike StrawHOST
24:08
You have.
Mike StrawHOST
24:10
Supermassive Games, where their games have not performed well lately.
Mike StrawHOST
24:14
And you have People Can Fly, who are struggling.
Mike StrawHOST
24:17
All these studios are struggling.
AlyssaHOST
33:13
But this is the final.
AlyssaHOST
33:16
part of the dark anthology season one uh from supermassive games so we have man of madon little hope house of ashes and then devil and me
MicahHOST
33:25
that's just season one yeah it's like a 10 year span not a 10 years i know it was and
AlyssaHOST
33:30
they changed the games greatly throughout the time uh throughout that time and the basically the setting here is um it's about a copycat of hh holmes who was America's first serial killer, and he built this grand hotel in Chicago, and he built it in a way that nobody knew the floor plan, so he hired people to build part of a staircase, fired them, hired people to build the other part, so that he could have basically torture chambers throughout this entire hotel, and dead ends, and secret rooms, and all sorts of just crazy wild stuff for his death hotel.
AlyssaHOST
37:01
I do feel like this game was a big downgrade from House of Ashes.
AlyssaHOST
37:05
And I wonder if we had discussed earlier in the night off... show that like off air that uh a lot of people went to fire sprite um and i wonder if that because like the graphics are worse the story is worse the there's glitching in it um that sometimes you feel a little cheated by the decisions like a lot of times it'll hint at like whether you're gonna die not necessarily during the decision but you can find hints by exploration and stuff so there was one choice where we felt really cheated because we didn't choose that choice but it forced us to um and like the graphics like the wine and the wine glasses we were laughing because it was like angled but they weren't drinking it um just it felt like a big step down some of the voice acting was a
MicahHOST
37:51
Well, just for context, this is made by Supermassive Games.
MicahHOST
37:54
Oh, yeah.
Nick AkermanGUEST
21:04
But yeah, no, it wasn't them.
Nick AkermanGUEST
21:05
It was Supermassive Games.
Nick AkermanGUEST
21:08
Oh.
Nick AkermanGUEST
21:09
So...
JacksonHOST
47:27
Thank you.
JacksonHOST
47:29
Of Supermassive Games and their entire catalog.
JacksonHOST
47:33
Now, if you're unfamiliar, Supermassive Games is the name of the developer that created the Dark Pictures Anthology, the Quarry, Until Dawn, and a handful of others.
JacksonHOST
47:46
They are some of my favorite games to play.
JacksonHOST
47:49
They are, in my opinion, the perfect game for spook games.
JacksonHOST
48:24
Actually, one more thing before we really do jump into it is that this studio...
JacksonHOST
48:29
I had an idea to make an episode, and maybe we won't do it, and we'll just talk about it here.
JacksonHOST
48:33
It's called, What the Fuck is Supermassive Games Doing? Because they're not making the Until Dawn sequel.
IanHOST
63:09
Yeah.
IanHOST
63:10
Because it's developed by Supermassive Games, who made Until Dawn, The Quarry, and the Dark Pictures anthology.
IanHOST
63:18
All
BeckyHOST
63:19
of which we like.

Beat Every GameHOST
45:56
That kinda came and went.
PraxHOST
45:57
It's kind of made by Supermassive.
Beat Every GameHOST
45:58
Yeah.
PraxHOST
45:58
Yeah, those-
PraxHOST
46:12
It's kind of like the Heavy Rain philosophy transferred specifically into, like, a horror experience.
Beat Every GameHOST
46:17
Mm-hmm.
PraxHOST
46:18
Right? All those Supermassive, like, horror games all kind of, like, are predicated on the same thing, where, uh, it's very, it's very decision based.
PraxHOST
46:26
One thing that I didn't know about those games, too, is that they, they do...
DaveyHOST
50:05
And that's not saying a lot.
DaveyHOST
50:07
Because Supermassive Games, ever since Until Dawn, it's not been the same.
DaveyHOST
50:13
Right? It's just not been the same.
DaveyHOST
50:15
Ever since that Sony money ran out, it's been all over the place.
Andy CortezHOST
48:01
I think this is the first time they've done it.
Tim GettysHOST
48:03
Uh, Super Massive Games today launches an online multiplayer mode via a free update for its sci-fi horror, s- s- sor- yeah, sci-fi survival horror adventure, Directive 8020.
Andy CortezHOST
48:14
Horror.
Andy CortezHOST
48:15
