Super Sonic

My friend that had all the consoles, he had all of them, and um, I was like, "You have a Sega Genesis?" Because, you know, I didn't know anyone else that had one.

And, um, I still remember playing it that first time, and he got the like boots that make you run fast, and he's like, "You wanna see Super Sonic-

[laughs]

... go super fast?"

... are short, he has, like, three of them and it doesn't take long.

Um, but that big payoff of doing everything, like sitting through six versions of the same story, um, with, like, slight differences, and then b- and, like, it culminates in that Super Sonic closer.

And Super Sonic is, like, the most hype thing ever.

Yes.

[laughs] Uh, e- every time there was a Sonic game as a kid, I was like, I just couldn't wait to see, uh, like, the Super Sonic scene.

Um, and that big payoff of just, like, sitting, like, making your way through everything, tolerating the lesser moments, and you just get this awesome final chapter.

Um, and again, it's, it's something they don't do as much these days.

I want to start off with just, like, you know, just for, you know, for those who may not have played it, surprisingly enough, Sonic, you know, is your standard 2D platformer.

You have, you know, you play as Sonic the Hedgehog, you... run over you run and jump over things and you bop things on the head but you can only really damage them when sonic is in a ball if sonic is not in a ball then he can't really do anything to them unless he's super sonic but that's you know a different story um some of the new things they added to it was the the big one obviously is the spin dash the spin dash was a huge uh huge upgrade i think everyone would agree with that And that came from basically players just complaining.

So if they would get stuck on some of the loop-de-loops, and they wouldn't have enough momentum to redo a loop or anything like that.

So they decided to put in the spin dash.

All right.

Any final thoughts on the gameplay before we go into visuals, overall presentation, all that good stuff?

I mean, we didn't mention it, but the addition of Super Sonic made collecting the emeralds so much more gratifying than in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, where if you collect the six emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog, all you get is the, I guess, good ending where Robotnik is a grumpy and he's jumping up and down on the end sign and he's not juggling his emeralds and telling you to try again.

But in Sonic 2, you get... of course sonic going super saiyan and being a overpowered like like charge forward powerhouse that makes the game so much easier uh obviously you have to get through seven of the special stages and those can be rough um but uh supersonic i think is such a game changer when it comes to the reason to collect the emeralds

They are in hiding in under the disguise of Bob Beaky Cir- uh, uh, Circus, traveling circus.

And spoilers for a little bit, you get, you get STC Super Sonic when all thing, uh, everything's said and done.

And ooh, I really like this one.

So I was-

[laughs] It's 'cause he does have the slurly eyes.

So yeah, like- Sometimes I do forget, like, it's not just the emeralds that turns, um, Sonic super, in STC in particular.

'Cause it's, you know, it's h- Incredible Hulk rules instead of it's just chaos energy instead of the gamma rays, you know? So if he's in, like, legitimate danger and stress and freaking out, he just, like, yeah, the Super Sonic just awakens in him.

And so there it is flashing on the sky and a blaze of sparkling.

So you got two of the more weird ones.

We're going to start with Super Sonic.

That's Sonic the Hedgehog in basically his Super Saiyan form.

Sonic the Hedgehog.

You don't, if you, if you already know right away, tell me otherwise I'll give you some time as we do this to sort of like look into it, but I will need a decision before we leave today.

Yeah, here's the thing.

Super Sonic would be something I would do for my kid.
