Super Mario All-Stars

Number five.

[upbeat music] So my number five is going to be Super Mario All-Stars.

Is this a basic bitch, you know, vanilla pick? Yes, it is.

Is it also a game that I think is very deserving? Obviously.

That's why it's on a list.

Are there differences between the Super Mario All-Stars versions and the original versions, where the original versions probably hold up a little better? Y- yes, you could say that about a lot of remakes of games from the 8 and 16-bit generation, even though this was an 8 to 16-bit jump.

Uh, I would say that, yeah, the 8-bit versions probably control a little bit better, and they're just a genuinely better experience.

But the entire package that Nintendo put together for Super Mario All-Stars, and if you look at the release date, I have to assume this was the 10th anniversary of the Famicom celebration, and we didn't really get that in the United States because it didn't line up.

Like, I think that would just feel weird, and it would take away a lot of the charm, like you're talking about.

However, I do think one of the best remakes of all time, and maybe you could quibble with me and, and say that this is actually a remaster, Super Mario All-Stars was a, uh, incredible remake compilation where it was one, two, three, and Lost Levels, and all remade in kind of like the Super Mario World adjacent-

Mm-hmm.

Then we had Super Mario All-Stars.

Um, then eventually about a year later after that we had All-Stars plus Super Mario World in a cart.

Then we had Donkey Kong Country.

How about you, Jack?

That's awesome.

Uh, I gotta go with the more options, so Super Mario World [laughs] plus Super Mario All-Stars.

Um, my, I love Super Mario World and yeah, it will be the launch game for me that I, that I remember.

... how, how...

Like, when I think back to Mario 3, my bra- and maybe this is because of the, the, uh, packaged re-release for All Stars.

Mm-hmm.

But mentally, I think of it as being more of a Super Nintendo game than a Nintendo game-

So hard to point with this going backwards.

Over here... is Mario All-Stars, and then the original, and then, like, the Street Fighter II.

Some of them actually have...

Now, those are...

I've got some boxes that are back there from the games that we used to have.

But I've got my instruction manuals for a fairly good condition here.

Now, you can tell the Zelda one has been red.

as well with Super Mario Brothers 3, so that's what I got for Christmas.

In hindsight, maybe should have asked for a Super Nintendo or Super Mario All-Stars, but I was a kid, I didn't know better.

We didn't have the internet to look these things up, Derek.

I just knew what my friend had and that I wanted it too.

Yeah.

On the Super Mario All-Stars cartridge, it was The Lost Levels, which was technically the real Super Mario 2.

It gets confusing.

Anyway, just to give that one more minute on the tangent, the newer movies, I watched the Super Mario movie, which I've had on Blu-ray for a few years, which I remember I put on a year ago and had to go to orchestra practice 20 minutes and it never finished.

So first one here for me.

So Super Mario All-Stars Plus World on the Super Nintendo is easily the best bang for your buck that you can get on the Super Nintendo as far as platforms are concerned.

So if you have lived under a rock throughout your entire life, you wouldn't know that this whole series is about saving the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and all of his Koopalings.

So in this particular combined cart, you get five games.

But for me, this is one of my all-time favorite carts.

So this is a pack-in back in the day.

You had Super Mario All-Stars, which didn't have World, and then you had this one, which was a pack-in.

And I got this as a five-year-old back then, and I...
