Can it really be that good? Or have all the perfectly reasonable people developed a collective case of recency bias? You finished it Tuesday, declared it the pinnacle of human achievement Wednesday, and now apparently I'm supposed to rearrange my life.

That's how it felt as people kept pushing Empire of Silence on me, book one of The Sun Eater.
JimHOST
0:56
Well, I finally read it.
JimHOST

Today, let's talk truth.

Empire of Silence is Christopher Rocchio's debut novel, first published in the United States by Daw Books on July 3rd, 2018.
JimHOST
2:36
It opens The Sun Eater, a now complete sequence of seven main novels.
JimHOST

Genre-wise, this is epic space opera with a very strong science fantasy identity.

I think I've recommended this to a couple of select people, and I don't recommend it to many because it is a commitment if you get into it.
Tym KajsturaGUEST
56:13
It is the Sun Eater series by Christopher Rucchio.
Tym KajsturaGUEST
56:19
The reason it ends up being Commitment is it is a finished series.
Tym KajsturaGUEST
56:23
It is seven books, and they're something like 600, 700 pages each.
Jed WolpawHOST
57:49
Okay.
Jed WolpawHOST
57:49
High praise.
Jed WolpawHOST
57:50
The Sun Eater series.
Jed WolpawHOST
57:51
All right.
AustinHOST
7:19
They were just getting out there, but man, their prose and everything else explodes in book two.
AustinHOST
7:24
I mean, Sun Eater, I didn't like book one, and then book two amazed me.
AustinHOST
7:29
With this, you're just saying that it's the same style, same really prose, same fundamental character, just the stakes get bigger, scope gets bigger, more interesting stuff happens.
AustinHOST
7:37
Yeah.
Chris WinkleHOST
16:45
And yeah, seeing that happen to, you know, Name of the Wind a couple of times is just very cringy.
Oren AshkenaziHOST
16:52
Yeah, with Sun Eater is the one that I feel comfortable talking about because it's already like selling extremely well.
Chris WinkleHOST
16:59
It's like best-selling, and I did a critique of that, and I showed a passage from Name of the Wind next to a passage from Sun Eater, and that is not normal.
Chris WinkleHOST
17:10
Again, the wording is different, but it's like thought by some of the passages, like the paragraphs of exposition are like thought by thought, basically following the same chain down.
Chris WinkleHOST
17:20
It's like you should do your own thinking.

Chris WinkleHOST
27:58
from writers, right? So I do think that if you were to do it too closely, probably what would happen is somebody would read it and be like, oh, this is this famous author, and you just would lose out on opportunities to distinguish yourself.
Oren AshkenaziHOST
28:13
Or what if I could trick them into thinking I was that famous author? Yeah.
Chris WinkleHOST
28:19
but I don't think there's a super huge risk of that happening right and so I just you know if anybody is worried they can reference more than one author and read several different books but I do think that having a model is instructional and so much about Warcraft is just based on practice and is always going to change based on who's writing it that if as long as you're not actually copying the thoughts that the writer puts down Sun Eater I'm not really worried about that becoming a problem.
JoshHOST
20:53
Steve Vai is here now for some reason.
OrionGUEST
20:57
It's just the walking away from an explosion in slow motion of the Sun Eater.
OrionGUEST
21:03
That's just what Demon White is.
OrionGUEST
21:04
That's such a good way to put it.

OrionGUEST
73:48
And I have to think for a second.
OrionGUEST
73:50
I have to think for a second.
OrionGUEST
73:51
I'm just like, if I were to play anyone in the Sun Eater universe, who would I be? But then I realized that I'm actually in the final book, so I can't say.
JoshHOST
73:58
Perfect.
Theo KandelSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
12:56
I think it was in this
Theo KandelGUEST
12:58
book series that I was reading called Sun Eater, which is a sci-fi series.
Theo KandelGUEST
13:04
It's so cool, by Christopher Ryukyo.
Theo KandelGUEST
13:07
And it's it's so oh, no, no, no. It's not in Sun Eater.
Theo KandelGUEST
13:12
Actually, it's not in Sun Eater.
Theo KandelGUEST
13:14
That one is sick.
Theo KandelGUEST
13:15
It's in The Will of the Many by James Islington, which is also really cool.
ChadHOST
42:13
And then there's that series by Christopher Riocchio.
ChadHOST
42:17
rocchio rocchio there we go the empire of silence i think is the first book it's like sun eater maybe sun eater trilogy i think that's right um but yeah so like a lot of and you know dune is like six books seven books or something three body problems three christopher rocco rocchio is like three i don't even know how many is in that one but there's a lot there's a lot of sci-fi so i've kind of i need to I need to find some, like, short but extremely fantasy fantasy books to sprinkle in between my Dunning, my Three-Body Problem, my Sun Eater Trilogy, and my Final Architecture series, which will probably take me through the end of the year to even get through all of those.
EvanHOST
42:56
That's a lot
ChadHOST
42:57
of Tchaikovsky, yeah.
