Summer Wars

Um-

Um, I would like to mention Summer Wars.

Um-

Summer Wars.

I was gonna mention

... one of my favorite films.

Um, I don't know.

Um, let's see.

mean, we both should have known better.

But at the same point in time, we've covered Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Boy and the Beast before on this.

There are some tropey moments in even all of those.

There are.

But, um, there are a few things I wanna talk about, and I kinda wanna continue the conversation of aesthetics.

Uh, we kinda talked about it with, uh, "Superflat" and "Summer Wars".

Uh, but we're gonna be talking about different aesthetics.

Specifically, I, I, I find it very interesting, and I think it ties into sci-fi as well, um, how similar '80s and nine- uh, or eight- the classic '80s American aesthetic, you know, shiny, um, retro futuristic, but not like '50s retro futuristic, um, that kind of aesthetic is kind of similar and different to the Japanese city pop aesthetic, and how they kinda converged, not willingly, but they kinda converged to create vaporwave, which again, is kinda similar but entirely different, uh, to both those aesthetics.

He has been the director of so many projects.

The Summer Wars movie that won an Academy Award, he was the voice director of that for the English dub.

He's nurtured so many actors away into the business.

And so many people owe their careers, myself included, to Mike.

... uh, we're kinda sticking in the sci-fi type of realm with some of the movies we'll be talking about f- over the next few episodes.

Um, and today we're going to be talking about "Summer Wars," which is a movie that Kayla was really pushing for us to watch.

Unless it's cars.

[laughs] Unless it's cars.

But like, this movie came out in, in "Summer Wars" came out in 20, uh, 2009.

Okay.

Metal and Magi6486 says, any plans to keep watching anime? If you don't have time for shows, there's plenty of good movies.

Summer Wars, Promare, 100 Meters, etc.

Yeah, I try to fit it in when I can.

It's just that I always seem to be in the middle of some weird, wacky project or traveling all the time.

But if she's not, also.

Summer Wars.

Summer Wars is going to be our next movie that we're going to review.

I think that's probably what we're going to have to do.

I think moving forward for listeners, I think a lot of our episodes for the next, I don't know how long, a lot of us is going to be a lot more like older movies or just movies in general, like anime movies in general, just because it's easier to make episodes on instead of having to watch full seasons.

You would have thought.

And then, yeah, Summer Wars is where it is.

And, yeah, so, like, most of the Hosoda stuff has not breached, like, our top half of the list.

I have reasonable expectations, I think, as to where I am worried about where this is going to land.

But, like, to get into the top half of the list, you need to be, like, really, really good.

And we all have to agree so.

Yeah, no, I think we all generally agree that Belle and the girl who leapt through time are pretty good, right? So with Summer Wars, like as much as we gave it a hard time, it's

still a good

[laughs]

And it's, and it's just, like, really, like, bright and cheery, and it looks like one of those scenes from, like, Summer Wars where it's, like, the camera's flying through Oz and you're seeing all the characters kinda, like, j- jumping up and down and, and, you know, dancing and stuff like that.

And it, like, there's, there's stuff in the movie that's like that.

It's like, whoa, this really doesn't fit the rest of the movie.

Jesus.

Yeah, remember Belle? Oof.

Yeah, he, he, he's been like slowly evolving more and more CG, because Summer Wars had like a lot of CG, but like it had way more like hand drawn, but then Belle felt like it was like half and half almost, and this is like all CG.

Um, but you know, like when you're, uh, playing like Hanafuda cards against like an AI creature and betting all these accounts, it's pretty dope is what I'm saying.
