Sumida Park

After the whole thing burned down in the quake, though, the family donated it to the government to turn into a park.

The resulting Hamacho Park was one of three major parks built as disaster recovery areas after the quake, alongside Sumida Park near Asakusa, and Kinshi Park just off the Yokogiken River.

All three were built on donated land.

Sumida Park combined some waterfront property Tokyo City had already owned with some estates owned by a branch of the Tokugawa family who were in good patriotic standing by the '20s and eager to demonstrate that fact.

Kinshi Park had been an Imperial Japanese army depot that was already scheduled to be mothballed as its services were moved to other sites, so the army just donated that land to the city as well.

52 smaller parks were also built under the final construction plan, but the result was a lot less than Gotō Shimpei's ambitious hopes for the greenification of Tokyo City.
