Suchiate River

Under the cover of night, they walked into Costa Rica, where another bus picked them up and dropped them in San Jose the same day.

Migrants moving north through Guatemala avoided the Mexican immigration office on the bridge over the Suchiate River, crossing the same on rubber rafts for a small fee, often within sight of authorities.

To get across the U.S. border, there were dozens of ways to get around official barriers, most of them now facilitated by Mexican cartels.

The longest walk still takes place in the Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama.
