148. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Review
J
7:09JamesHOST
So it's not just, you know, the video game and then the anime.
J
7:12JamesHOST
It has... a lot going forward and also has a collectible card game like your pokemon cards and stuff like that and or like almost like magic the gathering i believe because i did see on tiktok there's a people that play the tabletop i'm excuse me the card game and like uh cons and stuff like that i didn't know that i found that out just doing research so that was interesting to me i had no clue i thought it was just a tabletop and then the video game and then the anime but hey there's cards out there too so if you like um pcg cyberpunk got it as well so that's very interesting but yeah uh the anime was first announced in 2020 and the anime eventually premiered on netflix in 2022 done by the goats at studio trigger and it's a complete original story when this first came out and it finished up studio tricker said they weren't doing those season two like this was like a standalone thing but i i don't know what happened from when that dropped to to now but hey i'm not mad at it i i like how it's going to be like a whole different story though it's not going to be like the events after david and his story and everything so that's cool uh if this continues i hope they're every season like is like an anthology in the cyberpunk universe that would be kind of dope so if they keep doing it i hope it goes that way but we shall see and with cyberpunk especially the game it's like super dystopian futuristic and studio trigger really knocks it out the park with their animation and the the art style with it and all just like the the colors that go go on in the city with night city and stuff the neon coloring the violence in it and this ridiculous looking world that you kind of see in the game but i think studio trigger just makes it just that much more how would i say kind of pop i guess with a lack of better term it just like makes it pop more than what you would see in the game and that makes it really look amazing but at the same time with all these colors and invitingness of the city somehow manages to be incredibly depressing at the same time and i think that's one of the biggest strengths of of edgerunners It looks like a giant action film, almost just an anime form, but underneath all the explosions, the guns and the cybertech.
J
9:46JamesHOST
It's really a story about people trying to find meaning in the world that doesn't really care whether they live or die.
J
9:51JamesHOST
that's when we meet our main character david david martinez full name and you know he's a young cat teenager living in night city with his mom he's smart but he's also struggling his mother gloria works constantly just to get uh to provide for him and to just make it in night city i think she was a emt if i remember correctly and just trying to give him a better life and he attends the prestigious arasaka academy which isn't cheap so she's doing everything and anything to keep him in that school but of course he doesn't really fit in he's poor compared to his classmates and he's constantly just being bullied and he's surrounded by people who have more money power and connections than what he'll ever have And then slowly, well, not slowly, it kind of just happens.

and r.i.p david and rebecca my gosh bro if y'all go watch this and see that scene of uh adam smasher just knocking out my my girl rebecca i'll never forgive him bro i'll never forgive him that shit was diabolical but all of this to say this is basically the entire story in one one little compact episode it's just there's more to what goes on here everyone is trying to get this cyborg because david's the only one that can really control it arasaka i keep forgetting the other corporation's name but they try to retrieve it and they try to take david to i think they want to militarize it if i remember correctly but anywho david is really spending his entire life trying to become stronger to give someone else their dream and the process you know he dies and he succeeded but what what does that leave him it's it's so crazy because like i get what you what he was trying to do but there had to been other ways to do it without you having to die for it you know what i mean but hey he's a teenage kid so there's no there's only like linear thinking so i can see why he went the way he did but at the same time we i didn't discuss it a lot but lucy was used by these corporations and diving into i forget what was the old net or the dead web i can't her and a lot of other kids that they picked up had them dive and try to get past all of this um old web and everything and slowly but surely all of these kids die and lucy escapes and that's why she's trying to escape night city because she's kind of worried that they're going to try to take her again and that's why david is so gung-ho trying to get her out of there but at the end of the day david gets remembered as another uh edge runner in night city who just you know a legend that's it and lucy gets her freedom which is great for her but neither one gets what they actually wanted and that's really cyberpunk for you to be honest there's no perfect ending for it but there's just there had to have been at least terrible way to get this finished up but hey i could again teenage kid linear thinking so this is the way he wanted to go so i i gotta give it to him i guess but that's why i think cyberpunk edge runners works so well you can watch it for the action you can watch it because the animation looks incredible because studio trigger go crazy side tangent last year i think i mentioned on the episode when we went to anime frontier and went into the studio trigger uh panel and the animator he started drawing some cyberpunk stuff i don't know what cyberpunk stuff i think it was lucy and david if i'm but i can't remember completely i've i just have this inkling feeling that it was um them but at the same time i want to think it was for season two but hey don't hold me to that i i can't remember that was forever ago but he's didn't start drawing cyberpunk stuff he didn't get to finish but he said that this was going to be uh for merchandise and um promotion i believe I don't know whatever came of that.

Could you see it working better in that format?

Like if Studio Trigger, who made Cyberpunk Edgerunners, made a lollipop chainsaw anime, it'd probably be the greatest thing ever.
M

especially if they use James Gunn's script and just use that as the basis for the anime and then if you got a good anime studio to make it like Trigger or Photoball or the people who made Attack on Titan or something like that it would probably be an incredible anime Because I feel like you can

The Thirty Best Anime Shows of All Time

The video game had a notoriously disastrous launch, dragged through the mud for bugs and unmet promises.
S
40:42speaker_1HOST
But Studio Trigger stepped in and created an anime so visually compelling and emotionally devastating that it literally breathed new life into the franchise and salvaged its public reputation.
S
40:54speaker_0HOST
It follows David Martinez, a brilliant but impoverished street smart kid pushed to the absolute brink by a sudden tragedy.

With nothing left to lose, he installs a military-grade cybernetic spine into his body and rises through the underworld as an edgerunner or mercenary.
Media Buffet Ep. 486: Delicious in Dungeon Season 1
M
0:00MercuryHOST
Hello, my name is Mercury, and welcome to this brand-new episode of Media Buffet.
M
0:08MercuryHOST
Today, I am alone, and I'll be discussing the first season, and currently only season, of Delicious in Dungeon, one of, I think, the almost newest series by, uh, by Studio Trigger.
M
0:23MercuryHOST
By St- Studio Trigger.
M
0:25MercuryHOST
Uh, I say almost because in about, like, two weeks, like around almost two weeks, little over, uh, Edgerunners 2, uh, comes out.
M
0:35MercuryHOST
So that's also made by Trigger, so you know.
M
4:44MercuryHOST
I'll talk about this in, like, the future section because it's one of the fre- few times an episode gets delayed for over a year and I can still talk about the fucking future [laughs].
M
4:56MercuryHOST
Um, like, even though Delicious in Dungeon, like, came out a year ago and I can still c- talk about it, but, like, the, this season specifically adapts around half of the original, uh, a- manga.
M
5:17MercuryHOST
This is one, this is like one of Studio Trigger's only, like, attempts... not attempts, but, like, projects adapting a manga.

T

That's like, nobody says anything.
T
20:56ToastyHOST
It's just like, face quirks or like you know the way that they're doing the camera angles or quote camera angles um or like you know the animation of it and everything it's like oh okay like there's so much like detail here in this animation that's just like if you see it And notice it and if you don't it's not it's not gonna like Maybe you miss like a lot of characterization stuff that doesn't have it's like it's really the really masterful work Uh, which you make since studio trigger days.
T
21:41ToastyHOST
I mean they obviously have some incredibly popular uh animes that they've uh worked on and whatnot so um to be expected
G
21:51GenesisHOST
Totally agree.
G
21:52GenesisHOST
Studio Trigger has been, like, they did such an amazing job with it, and taking an IP that has so much history and lore to it, and then building upon it, and making it seamlessly fit in, like... that is what to me it this feels like a cyberpunk story this fits within the realm if these were other characters like obviously this is this is main's crew um but this could have been a johnny story you know i mean obviously people wouldn't have died but um in order to keep the storyline consistent but it could have been a side crew you know um it would have fit if these were rogues people it would have fit if this was a crew running out of the atlantis um for previous lore and things like that so the fact that edge runners feels so cyberpunk it absolutely belongs as canonized lore I also noticed really about the relationship between David and Lucy, how it definitely shifts in this episode.
G
23:19GenesisHOST
We feel them connecting on a lot more levels.
G
23:23GenesisHOST
The physicality of it increases.
