Studio Museum in Harlem

You know, these works go for 500, 750, oftentimes in the millions.

I went, I got that special edition Alma Thomas scarf from the Studio Museum, and I framed it.

Framed it.

Yeah, yeah.

He designed the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, which is the foremost institution for the study of African-American history and culture in Harlem on 135th Street and Lenox with his firm Bond Rider Associates.

At the same time, they also designed the Studio Museum in Harlem, which has since been demolished.

But on 125th Street, the first permanent home of the Studio Museum was a renovation of an existing building.

And then later, as he merged with the larger firm Davis Brody and Associates and eventually became Davis Brody Bond, Bond designed a number of projects that started to have more private clients, bigger scale, and more visibility.

But you know better than I do, Lord, why I've got the indigo mercy blues.

[audience clapping] And, uh, and Betye Saar has made this incredible piece at the Studio Museum in Harlem called Indigo Mercy Blues, and you can see it when you go to Studio.

And then there's this amazing piece in our book called Diva by Alison Saar.

I think it was shown years ago at the Hirshhorn, and it's just one of these powerful pieces.

Oh my God.

But in other celebrity news, y'all, the global icon Beyonce, y'all, and honey renowned art collector Beyonce marked her 45th birthday on September the 4th by making a massive transformative $2 million donation to the legendary Studio Museum in Harlem.

Oh my gosh.

That's nice.

So we're in some really, really cool places that really appreciate the story, the history, the legacy of everything that our brand represents.

I love that.

Why did this Gilliam come to mind for how you looked at blue?

That painting in the collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem is, as you said, part of a series that Gilliam does following the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

And these pieces have always struck me for their formal gestures towards the living entity that is blood, that, that makes up human beings.

And at the same time, Gilliam in these works, not just the, the King series, the April four pieces, but throughout this period, he, he realizes that the, the quality, the, the, the texture, the movement, the flow of his paint is itself a kind of a, a, the subject of these works.

Uh, but over the weekend, um, some more gifts that Beyoncé gave to us, uh, on her birthday came out.

Um, so n- one of them that I thought was really dope, she donated $2 million, or she made a $2 million gift, to a studio museum in Harlem.

Hmm.

So the museum considers itself a hive of activity, activity.
