I think Così fan tutte is an opera that does ask the question, is heterosexual monogamy bad, actually, and almost has the balls to say yes.

This keyboard music seems to have a lot of Baroque quality to it.

Next up is the Franck String Quartet.

This is his only string quartet, and it was quite long, and yet I liked it more than I thought I would.

I was kind of expecting to get bored, and I really didn't, and there was just a lot of variety in this within the string quartet idiom.

I know I've said before that sometimes...

There's not so much variety or that I prefer the string orchestra to the string quartet, but I really found the melodic material here and the development of it to be engaging enough to keep my attention pretty well for the length of it, which was fairly lengthy.

And it reminded me of the Dvorak Serenade in that close to the beginning of the last movement, we had reiterations of the themes from the other movements.

The scherzo theme and texture in particular was very engaging, but I was also interested in the way that it kind of stopped and started a lot, the scherzo movement in particular, but all the movements kind of did this to some extent and changed tempos, changed back.

But he didn't do what I did.

Philip has this kind of moody score, which he wrote for String Quartet.

Right, right.

Arnaud's Quartet did it.

So that's that one.

Next one is Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8.

This was from 1960.

And this one, I was kind of playing with the sort of whimsy aspect of goth.

On today's date in 1785, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dedicated six string quartets to his friend and older colleague, Josef Haydn.

Earlier that year, Haydn heard some of them performed in Vienna.

Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang's father, was also present and must have been elated when Haydn said, Before God and as an honest man I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name.

Mozart's quartets were published by the Viennese firm Artaria and generated some much-needed income for Wolfgang.

Whether they made money for their publisher is another matter.

Three years later, one of Mozart's lesser contemporaries, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, offered Artaria six of his string quartets at the same price they paid Mozart, with a note that read...

Yeah, yeah.

I see it as a piano concerto, a string quartet, and then the butterfly cantata.

But tell me more than that.

It's on the 150 label.
