So antibiotics is a general term, and it really means medicines that kill or slow the growth of bacteria, and there are all sorts of bacteria that cause disease in humans, and so there's lots of reasons for people to take antibiotics.

Uh, sometimes an infection in the skin, sometimes an infection deeper in the body, sore throats, um, caused by Strep pyogenes, Group A Strep, pneumonia.

But antibiotics, the ones that work against bacteria, don't work against viruses, so antibiotics aren't useful for influenza, for instance.

Is, is it a bit preemptive to be giving tho- that ten-day course and saying start it instantly if they don't have rheumatic fever? Like, is-- could there be-- is there any danger in that?

In the old days, it used to be that you would go to the doctor, you'd have the throat swab done, the s- result of the throat swab would come back, and then the doctor would say, "You don't have the rheumatic fever causing germ, group A strep, Strep pyogenes, in your throat.

You've just got a virus.
