Street Player

Chaka Khan was fine doing double duty, but the rest of the Rufus group resented her solo contract, feeling that it stole the spotlight from the band's own releases.

The recording sessions for Rufus' 1978 album, Street Player, were contentious, but the album was successfully finished.

To me, while Street Player does still have a bit of funk to it, I consider this album to be primarily a soul album, as it is dominated by slow jam soul ballads such as the song Stay.

When a man really cries He's got something on his mind This world's full of lies You and me, we're one of a kind The good Lord will stand behind Every sin we apply To faith That's love Love Love Ooh Love Ooh

Meanwhile, Chaka Khan completed her debut solo album that was also released in 1978.
