Charlotte MandellGUEST

Charlotte MandellGUEST

Bryan MainHOST

So the mind is being conveyed, but it's doing so neatly, following all the standard rules of grammar.
Levent BulutHOST
2:00
But when we switch over to stream of consciousness, all those rules, they just fly right out the window.
Levent BulutHOST
2:05
Here, the focus is entirely on association.
Levent BulutHOST
2:08
Stream of consciousness doesn't care about logic.
Levent BulutHOST
2:10
It moves by association.
Levent BulutHOST

A character smells something and bam, they're thrown into a childhood memory.
Levent BulutHOST
2:39
Okay, so we've defined them, but putting them side by side really clears up the confusion.

20:02
But I feel like audience members do, your audience need to know what they're getting and the kind of thing they're getting.
Michaella ParkesGUEST

And my initial Substack was called Structured Stream of Consciousness because it was exactly that.
Michaella ParkesGUEST
20:12
It was me taking stream of consciousness like thoughts chaotic iphone notes and turning them into personal essays but after a certain amount of time i was like i keep coming back to the same things i want to write about love i want to write about food i want to write about like feeling things and feeling excited about you know life and creativity and what the world has on offer and so that's when i rebranded to for starters because i was like i keep kind of writing these essays which are like more more in that direction um and it also helps because now also when i'm pitching myself to say an editor for a food or a romance feature which I often write I can say well I've also got you know a following of 500 people on Substack and this is this is my Substack name and here's my tagline and it sort of fits within the kinds of features that I'm writing as well so those two things are now working a bit more synergistically I would say um and that's great like I but also it's quite daunting to be like ah I'm gonna have to rebrand and I've already got like loads of people on this thing but I think part of the beauty and Claire you do this so brilliantly I always love seeing how you do it is like telling people what you're doing people are really what I found most interesting because I started in this place where I didn't really have much my name's like people love to see the journey they want to come with you they want you to they want to be like you to hold your hands up and be like hey I've done this scary thing and I'm going to try something new let me know if you like it or not and that's part of building a community that's it's authentic people actually like to see that so you know even something like rebranding People who have followed me from the beginning get it.
Michaella ParkesGUEST
21:40
People who didn't follow me before, well, they don't know.
Michaella ParkesGUEST
21:42
So it doesn't really impact them.

Now, this is me writing notes as I'm watching the show, so you have to understand this is a bit of a, this is a bit of a, what do you call it? Free association-
Nick JewHOST

Tayrel713HOST

Tayrel713HOST

Yeah, yeah.
BrianHOST

I kinda know why I'm doing it, it'd be hard to explain.
BrianHOST
8:27
But how I'm doing it, I don't know, right? Because this is just like, they call it stream of consciousness, right? I don't think that's an appropriate name, or there's probably a lot of different names for what I'm talking about, uh, for, for things in this area, right? Um, it's kinda like, you know, all the names for snow in Inuit, right? I'm very...

BrianHOST
8:49
I mean, I'm tempted to say, I don't wanna say it, you know, with any solid certainty, but I'm tempted to say that I am like a connoisseur of thought process, right? And the way I am learning about my thought process is I t- I kind of train myself at...

BrianHOST
25:24
I mean, that is what is, that is maybe what connects to that idea of stream of, stream of consciousness.
BrianHOST
25:28
I'm just like a little rippling stream, you know? But it, that rippling stream is, you know, has a very sophisticated pattern, um, recognition mechanism in the, running in the background that's feeding into it all the time, right? And it's, it's working actually.
