We were at a nice place in Strathmere, New Jersey, your kind of beach town, Jeff.

A barrier island, if you want to call it that.

It's a strip of sand in between two other islands.

In this area that you're going to have to start paying for.

The Upper Township Committee unanimously decided this past week to require beach badges beginning next season.

Folks who like to go to the beach in Strathmere will have to start paying next year.

The Upper Township Committee unanimously decided Monday night to start requiring beach badges beginning next season, and they're not free.

Daily tags will cost ten dollars, weekly badges twenty, while seasonal badges will be forty-five bucks, except early birds, early shore birds can buy a seasonal tag for thirty bucks from October through President's Day in February.

The move to end a tradition of free beaches in Strathmere is estimated to bring in about two hundred thousand dollars a year for the shore town.

Um, I was at a beach bar in Strathmere, okay, which is right across the bridge from Ocean City, New Jersey.

And I turn around, and I just hear cheers, and I knew the Phillies were playing, and they were down four-nothing, and I'm like, "What is going on right now?" So basically, let me tee up this situation.

She's recorded as visitors 213 bird species, 79 butterfly species, and 121 assorted other pollinators, including wasps, flies, bees, and beetles.

"When I step outside, it's like going into a wilderness, and it's just a tiny yard," she said, "but that's what's possible for people who embrace gardening with native plants." Strathmere residents have made native planting a priority in homes and public areas throughout town, along with New Jersey Fish and Wildlife and Upper Township.

The Strathmere Improvement Association Native Plant Committee members have erected gardens at several beach entrances in front of the Schiavo Library and around the welcome, uh, Strathmere sign.

"We have a gem of a town and wanted to maximize the beauty of our beaches by cleaning up and planting at our entrances," said Linda C. Bateman, a member of the committee that began planting gardens three years ago, adding a couple streets at a time.

Native plants including goldenrod, milkweed, bayberry, elderberry, Virginia rose, and New Jersey native wildflowers are labeled to educate beachgoers.

Okay, I'm pretty close to being done.

The entrance to Corson's Inlet State Park, a part of Strathmere overseen by Belleplain State Forest, is also getting a makeover to include native plants.
