Strøget

Ah, yes.

The story of Strøget.

Strøget is currently the main shopping artery in Copenhagen.

If you visit today, it is one of the longest, most famous pedestrian shopping streets in the entire world.

It is universally beloved.

It is iconic.

You can't imagine it any other way.

But back in 1962, when the city government first proposed banning cars on Strøget, the opposition was apocalyptic, particularly from the local shop owners and business leaders.

So in the morning, we slept in again.

We had a late breakfast, and then we walked down to, I have to remember how to pronounce this, Strøget.

It's spelled S-T-R-O with a slash through it.

I don't know what that letter is called in Danish.

G-E-T. Strøget.

It is a pedestrian-only shopping street.

It has souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants, but then also stores like H&M or Zara or whatever other, like, clothing stores you could find.

So I thought that would be a really fun thing to do if we ever came back and the weather was nice, is just to stop at a market or a grocery store, grab lunch, and have a picnic on the lawn in the King's Garden near Rosenborg Palace.
