You can build a state-of-the-art healthcare clinic, but becoming part of a community takes more than a ribbon cutting and some impressive equipment.

Three years after opening its Manhattan clinic, Stormont Vail Health is working to turn that investment into lasting relationships, and help people get the care they need closer to home.

Clinic Director Andrew Brookens joins us today to talk about what's taking root and what comes next.

We're visiting with him about the Stormont Vail Health Manhattan Campus Clinic.

Three years ago, the idea came about, but before we get into the history, give us a sense for people who may drive by it and wonder what in the world goes on in there.

Is this sales tax the best way to pay for it? What will it cost us? What will it accomplish? And what are the alternatives? My thanks today to Manhattan City Manager Danielle Doolen and Chamber CEO Jason Smith, who have made the case and allowed you to examine the evidence, and also for providing the opportunity to give our own assumptions a little scrutiny.

The mountaintop goal is to reach a decision we can explain with something more substantial than, "I hate taxes," or, "I sure am sick of potholes." Three years after opening a new state-of-the-art healthcare clinic in Manhattan, Andrew Brookins with Stormont Vail Health will share what is working and what is still to come on Top of the Hill North of K-State.

Next week, local candidates, Republicans Stacy Kohlmeier and Noah Perry, running for seats representing Manhattan in the Kansas House, Democrat Rob Volker, who wants to be a Riley County commissioner, Democratic House hopeful Sydney Carlin and Brenda Bandy, GOP County Commissioner John Ford will appear here the week before the election.

We have this idea that if more people think a little bit deeper and a little bit longer about our community, about the issues that are going on in our area, in our state, better decision-making will follow.
