I host a radio show called Things Not Seen about culture and faith, and I'm an associate professor of Christian spirituality and philosophical theology at the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University Chicago.

I'm here with my two good friends, Heidi Schlumpf and Dan Horan.

Heidi is senior correspondent at Commonweal Magazine.com. She is also an award-winning journalist and part-time faculty member at Loyola University Chicago.

Dan is professor of philosophy, religious studies, and theology at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana.

There's nothing in Jesus's ministry preaching that makes clear that this is a legitimate way to understand the Christian tradition or the discipleship that we're all called to through baptism.

Instead, we are called to suffer, literally, right, to take up our cross.

To lay down our lives for our friends, for our neighbors, to love our enemies as ourselves.

So it's not even empathy.
