[jazz music][jazz music] This is the great Joe Henderson on tenor sax with a ballad version of Lazy Afternoon from 1965 with drummer Pete LaRocca, bassist Steve Swallow, and pianist Steve Kuhn from Pete LaRocca's album Basra.

And the story goes Pete and Steve Swallow took LSD before recording the session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio.

I don't know about Joe Henderson though, but he was a chain smoker, which pretty much led to his demise from emphysema.

In the beginning was two from Joe Captain, Sunday Arvo One and Sunday Arvo Two.

Well, I was such the beneficiary of that, certainly with Gary, but even before that in Kansas City where, you know, starting when I was about 15 or so, you know, I started getting gigs with really the best musicians in town there, you know, all of whom were, of course, way older than me then.

And, you know, across time I've had... you know, really the benefit of getting to play with, you know, Herbie Hancock and Gary and Steve Swallow and, you know, Ron Carter recently more than ever before.

And, you know, to me, there's so many things about the experience of being on a bandstand with people who have kind of achieved a certain level through their experience and their musicianship that as a young player, you really can't get that any other way.

know more than i do piano you know really but then i thought at the time of starting this band this project i thought no i want to uh have piano in this and the double bass is the kind of obviously because of the carla and steve connection yeah there's all these things playing around in that because i love that period so much and miss it dearly and and uh I thought, oh, I should carry on in this vein of a drummer-less trio.

It's very difficult to play the music.

It would be much easier to have a drummer, actually.

We slowed things down a little bit in that set.

We finished off with the bassist Steve Swallow.

That was the track two from his most recent release, Winter Songs, put out on ECM Records.

Previous to that, a track from Ambrose Achenmuser and Mary Halverson, Tangled Pretty, from the album Slow Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings.

How can I be curious and engaged? Well, okay, let me, what's something I can't do? And so for whatever reason, I mean, I'm just telling you what happened this last week.

It was like, okay, there's that cool Steve Swallow tune, Falling Grace.

I never could really play it, even though my buddy showed it to me a year and a half ago.

I was like, let's play that for a little while.
