Derek MontillaHOST
54:41
Also, a few other tidbits this week in Diamondbacks history.
Derek MontillaHOST
54:45
On October 18, 2012, the Diamondbacks announced their new TV broadcast team of former D-backs manager Bob Brenley as the analyst and former ESPN Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter host Steve Berthiaume for play-by-play duties.
Derek MontillaHOST
55:00
That felt mean.
Derek MontillaHOST
55:02
I mean, it's just a historical fact, Damon.
BrettHOST
20:39
This one is actually in the broadcaster booth.
BrettHOST
20:42
As a little bit of a surprise to myself as well, I'm not sure about you guys or anybody else in chat, it was announced that Steve Berthiaume, I believe it was Alex Weiner, put out the post that he would not be returning to the D-backs on the broadcast booth in 2027 and beyond, and that his 14 years in the booth for the D-backs, which, crazy, it doesn't feel like 14 years, but I guess it really was.
BrettHOST
21:01
would come to an end and the D-backs would have a vacancy.
BrettHOST
21:05
And thankfully, the D-backs got this one right.
BrettHOST
21:23
But they ended up going with the guy that's been calling it on the radio since Schulte left, Chris Garagiola, who was just phenomenal in the booth, and every time he was doing games on TV, made me very happy, and I would listen to those with the actual D-backs broadcast on, because I could actually enjoy listening to him and Coleman or him and Candiotti, whoever it might be, versus Steve and Bob with their get-off-my-lawn energy, which they had some fun moments.
BrettHOST
21:46
I'm not going to say it was always a downside to watching them, but...
BrettHOST
21:49
When you compare the walk-off home run calls of the Ryan Walshman against the Dodgers or Ryan Walshman of the Cubs when Steve Berthiaume said, the Cubs comeback is complete.
BrettHOST
21:59
I get where he was coming with it, but my God, it's not good.
Derek MontillaHOST
21:34
In the D-backs broadcast booth, the Diamondbacks are turning to familiar voice to lead their television broadcast.
Derek MontillaHOST
21:40
Chris Gargiola is set here to replace Steve Berthiaume as the team's play-by-play announcer beginning next season.
Derek MontillaHOST
21:47
And the move obviously promotes Gargiola from the radio booth.
Derek MontillaHOST
21:50
television after three seasons as the team's primary radio play-by-play voice a beloved voice already in the community somebody who the diamondbacks fans already take to his calls over the television calls so this move felt right and that's no disrespect to steve berthiaume as you covered as you and and uh Fage there talked about – man, I mean –
Damon DogHOST
22:14
Jacob's mad by the way because he only gets to come on the show when I –
Derek MontillaHOST
22:18
I've told him he's banned from this program when I'm on it.
Derek MontillaHOST
23:27
It's going to be...
Derek MontillaHOST
23:28
Obviously, a big hole to fill in a way.
Jesse FriedmanHOST
38:58
Elsewhere in Diamondbacks news, our good friend Chris Garagiola was named the Diamondbacks' new television play-by-play voice.
Jesse FriedmanHOST
39:06
Of course, the team, uh, we learned recently is moving on from, uh, from Steve Berthiaume.
Jesse FriedmanHOST
39:11
He will not have that role moving forward.
Jesse FriedmanHOST
39:14
And, uh, this is just a report for right now.
Damon FerrellHOST
34:40
We are back here on the PHNX D-Back show.
Damon FerrellHOST
34:44
And as I kind of teased as we went into the break there, Nick Pecoro tweeting out that the Diamondbacks have officially settled on their next play-by-play voice when it comes to who will be taking over for Steve Berthiaume.
Damon FerrellHOST
35:02
And it is, of course, who I believe we all probably suspected that it was going to be.
Damon FerrellHOST
35:08
Chris Gargiola will be taking over from radio broadcast over to the television play-by-play.

8 MINS LATER

Damon FerrellHOST
42:50
We want to see the Diamondbacks succeed and win games.
Damon FerrellHOST
42:53
And I do think that while maybe the old school, the old wave was get a guy who's very removed and is going to give you as... of a take as possible.
Damon FerrellHOST
43:05
And that was kind of the Steve Berthiaume model and method.
Damon FerrellHOST
43:09
I do think that maybe the new wave method of let's get someone who cares about the team as much as we do in the booth there.
Jon LewisHOST
27:43
And of those sports centers, I can think of a couple off the top of my head.
Jon LewisHOST
27:47
Malice at the Palace, you and Steve Berthiaume that night, November 2004.
Jon LewisHOST
27:52
I'm almost 100% sure you and the late, great Stuart Scott, Kobe 81, the late Kobe Bryant as well, January 2006.
Jon LewisHOST
28:00
I got one more there or not? I got
PaulHOST
7:38
I know the whole D-backs MO right now is to cut payroll.
PaulHOST
7:41
They got rid of Steve Berthiaume.
PaulHOST
7:43
They fired Brian Kaplan, even though I don't really know what he did wrong this year.
PaulHOST
7:47
It's not like he was good, but he certainly wasn't the fucking problem.
Derek MontiaHOST
21:37
Simply put, they took responsibility and accountability, but it still didn't come down to the Diamondbacks not feeling that they needed to make changes.
Derek MontiaHOST
21:45
First, they felt like they needed a different voice in the booth by, uh, parting ways with Steve Berthiaume, the play-by-play television broadcaster for 14 seasons for this team.
Derek MontiaHOST
21:56
Uh, and now they've made the decision here that they are changing pitching coaches, uh, moving on from pitching coach Bryan Caplan, uh, to whoever the next person they hire there is.
Derek MontiaHOST
22:08
And overall here, this comes down to an idea that, you know, the Diamondbacks pitching staff wasn't terrible.
Jack SommersHOST
44:19
Yeah.
Jesse FriedmanHOST
44:20
Well, certainly from all of us, nothing, nothing but the best, uh, for Steve Berthiaume and wherever-
Jack SommersHOST
44:24
For sure
Jesse FriedmanHOST
44:25
... he's off headed next.
Derek MontillaHOST
12:09
That decision and that whole situation also doesn't fall on Brian Kaplan, which again makes his... you know, make, makes his firing or I guess non-renewal.
Derek MontillaHOST
12:20
Again, this is not just like Steve Berthiaume and just like it would have been with Torrey.
Derek MontillaHOST
12:24
This isn't a firing.
Derek MontillaHOST
12:25
This is the end of a contract where they're with, where they are not bringing back that individual, but whoever replaces Kaplan will become the fifth different pitching coach during Lavello's tenure.
