A long-awaited revitalization project in St. Lawrence County is moving forward.

State officials, local lawmakers, and SUNY Canton leadership celebrated the demolition of Canton's Midtown Plaza yesterday.

The building has been largely vacant since the early 2000 when its Jubilee supermarket closed.

Canton Mayor Mike Dalton said it used to be a vibrant space.

Now the eyesore will return to being a place for people to go.

And it'll be, you know, all different kinds of housing.

Demolition started last week and the lot is now nearly empty.

Developers plan a three-story building with 60 apartments and a retail space.

A three-story building that will include 60 apartments is planned for the space.

SUNY Canton will also operate an innovation center on the ground floor.

The property has remained mostly vacant since 2000.

That's when the Jubilee supermarket closed.
