Preface.

Between 1872 and 1900, Miss Nightingale used when she was able to send an annual letter or address to the probationer nurses of the Nightingale School of St. Thomas' Hospital and the nurses who have been trained there.

These addresses were usually read aloud by Sir Harry Verney, the chairman of the Nightingale Fund, in the presence of the probationers and nurses, and a printed copy or a lithograph facsimile of the manuscript was given to each of the nurses present for private use only.

I have to ask, what first sparked your interest in wounds?

Yeah, so my interest in wounds really came from when I went to the UK in 1986 to work at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

So I went with the plan.

It was many physicians and surgeons did that.

That Miss Nightingale made the offer is characteristic of her indomitable spirit.

The remaining third was to be spent at King's College Hospital for the maintenance and instruction of midwifery nurses, the want of whom was, at that time, much felt in the villages of England.

And to get to the bottom of that, I kind of want to start with that stethoscope we mentioned.

Because he trained as a doctor, right, at St. Thomas' Hospital in London in the 1890s.

He did, yeah, though he actually never practiced medicine professionally after qualifying in 1897.

Oh, wait, really? Not even for a bit?

I have a clinic in Balham every other month.

And I was contacted by this family in London whose son was in St. Thomas's Hospital.

And oddly enough, was on a gastrointestinal ward with colitis, which was my first ward that when I was a newly qualified staff nurse that I worked at, it was almost like a full circle.

So when I got off the train on Thursday, I went straight to Tommy's.

Yeah

... at St Thomas's Hospital.

And we, we had about 160, 170 subjects.

Not bad for this kind.

Oh, and she used that huge chunk of prize money that she'd gotten from the queen, right? Worth over 40 million pounds in today's money to further nursing education.

In 1860, she established St. Thomas' Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses.

She then established a school for the education of midwives at the King's College Hospital in 1862.

Young women from all across England wanted to be like her.
