The Bering Sea community of St. Paul is building what it calls a research economy.

That's after declines in the island's fishing industry.

And community leaders say the addition of a new research vessel will continue to make the vision a reality.

Alaska Desk's Katie Ruther reports.

The 50-foot research vessel Eventide arrived in St. Paul late last month after a seven-week journey from Port Townsend, Washington, marking a major milestone for the community.

John Wayne Milovidov is president of the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government.

He says for over a decade, he's worked to establish place-based education, workforce development, and research capabilities in St. Paul.

There were cruise ship rescues.

There were, you know, the fishing fleet for the world's crabs fished right off of St. Paul Island, and we're out there providing cover for them, so there was those kind of things.

So I had some of the most incredible rescues and worked with some of the most incredible people there.

I will tell the story of, um, the Air Medal that you read, 'cause I don't really feel like they go into just how crazy that whole rescue was and how lucky I am to be here having this conversation with you.

... yeah, I wouldn't recommend that.

It's not like going to St. Paul Island where you're shooting, you know, you're gonna shoot your eiders or whatever it was.

It w- it was more of a do it yourself.

But it was such a good adventure and-

hey, this is what we're predicting for the upcoming summer so that we can give everybody a little bit advanced notice if there are, say, worse acidification conditions or...

He says they've also discussed partnering with a new king crab mariculture project happening on St. Paul Island.

The plan is to raise baby Bristol Bay red king crabs in a lab and release them back into Bristol Bay when they reach a certain size.

But because juvenile crabs are more vulnerable to ocean acidity than adults, Goen says Pilcher's model could provide important data.

I am acquainted with our captain and have every comfort the ship can afford and every facility to pursue my studies.

We mean to proceed from here past the Seal Islands, St. Paul and St. George, then northward along the Siberian coast to about Cape Serdze, where a sledge party with dogs will be sent out to search the North Siberian coast while the steamer in the meanwhile will cross to the American shore and call at St. Michael, Kotzebue Sound, and other places where we shall have the opportunity of making short journeys inland.

Then as the ice melts and breaks up, we will probably push eastward around Point Barrow, then return to the Siberian side to pick up our land party, then endeavor to push through the ice to the mysterious unexplored Wrangel Land.

About one half of these are Aleuts, 1,000 Creoles, and the rest Indians of Nushagak, Yukon, and Kenai missions, over which the church exercises but a feeble control.
