He sent Hume £100, and finally an arrangement was come to by which Hume was to receive £300 a year so long as the connection lasted.

The position, though not an enviable one, had its obvious advantages, and Hume might have endured it but for the offensive tyranny of a Captain Vincent, a relation of the Dowager Marchioness, to whom was entrusted the management of the Marquis' affairs.
