I think if I wanted a solo game, it would be something like a Mage Knight, something I could just set up all day and play forever.
NeilanHOST
35:35
I do think one of the things that struck me, and this is on this person's collection, but I do think it's a great pick, is something like a Spirit Island that leans both cooperative and solo.
NeilanHOST
35:44
It gives you a little bit of both of utility in that sense because I can't help but think that I would be trying to pick games that really try to satisfy as many people player counts like sort of lengths needs as possible but some of it i think would fall down more to me around the lines of like i want x number of like party games i want x number of euro type games x number of like very fighty games i probably do want at least a few like two-player games even though that usually tends to be a relatively small amount of the games i tend to play but But I think I would probably try to break things down along those lines, along kind of like game feel, as it were.
NeilanHOST
36:25
I would be very remiss not to include one big sort of like thematic kind of experience, although it's kind of hard to imagine exactly what that would be.
Phil GardnerHOST
54:23
Outlings of a skull.
Davey BoydHOST
54:25
Spirit Island.
Phil GardnerHOST
54:27
No,
Davey BoydHOST
54:28
no.
Ananda GunaratnaHOST
5:56
And it's a great...
Ananda GunaratnaHOST
5:57
I mean, Spirit Island does that too.
Ananda GunaratnaHOST
5:59
It's a great mechanic.
Charlie McCarronHOST
6:01
I think this was the first game I played that did that.
Peter C. HaywardHOST
48:17
Why are there three people playing it? What does three people playing it uniquely add? What if there was hidden information? What if it was so complex that it, it...
Peter C. HaywardHOST
48:25
like Spirit Island style, every player needs their own hand.
Peter C. HaywardHOST
48:28
What it... like, as soon as I'm optimizing for three players, I'm optimizing away from one player.
AJ BrandenHOST
48:34
Okay.
SteveHOST
44:47
Okay, number four for Suzanne, and this is a lot of people's favorite game.
SteveHOST
44:53
It is well known as one of the best solo games, but also is not just a solo game, and that is Spirit Island.
SteveHOST
45:00
Spirit Island says, as a migrant in a previously invaded country, I appreciate the theme of fighting off invaders in Spirit Island.
SteveHOST
45:08
I think this cooperative game leaves such lasting gameplay memories because cooperating to coordinate players' actions is absolutely critical to winning the game.
SteveHOST
45:17
The game presents a pretty hard challenge, but I found it so engaging nevertheless.
SteveHOST
45:50
In fact, I think I've only played it once with other people and that was at a convention.
SteveHOST
45:57
Otherwise, I've only played it solo.
SteveHOST
46:00
And I play with the two characters, but I haven't really scratched the surface with Spirit Island.
KevinHOST
35:32
Like, I don't know.
KevinHOST
35:33
It's not better than Spirit Island or Bomb Busters or The Gang.
KevinHOST
35:38
Those are all games I like.
KevinHOST
35:40
But it does...
NunoHOST
61:42
yeah I actually wrote down bullet and games like that where it just kind of is a good workout for your brain in terms of seeing things and rotating things in your mind and thinking about patterns you kind of realize you start getting faster at it and it's helps you being a bit smarter with um thinking about physical things and shapes then i noted your spirit iceland that um kind of what does it teach you teaches that colonization is really ours to stop But it kind of teaches that sometimes entertainment, there's a lot of entertainment that, you know, there's nothing wrong with it, but it's about a lot of things that weren't exactly great things or good things, you know.
NunoHOST
62:31
And Spirit Island is the game where the designer was like, you know, I'm playing Catan, I'm playing all these games about colonization and, you know, that must have been really horrible for the people there.
NunoHOST
62:41
Why is there no game, you know? telling about the other side, the people that are being colonized, that are suffering.
NunoHOST
62:48
So yeah, sometimes board games can teach you about some moral things.
TonyHOST
19:36
you're not doing that
JakeHOST
19:37
But you talked about liking co-op experiences, and another game I've been playing a lot, again, is Spirit Island, the board game.
JakeHOST
19:47
I finally invested in getting the physical, the base set, which is, you know, now there's, I think there's like three or four expansions.
JakeHOST
19:55
There's so many different spirits out.
JakeHOST
21:19
At that point, it's like $30.
JakeHOST
21:22
But it doesn't even give you all the content that you get if you do the subscription.
JakeHOST
21:27
So I'm just like so annoyed because I would pay like $30 plus for a game on my phone to have all of Spirit Island.
Henry BirdseyeGUEST
21:41
But it's so annoying.
NeilanHOST
26:59
Some of the biggest omissions, some of these are obviously games we were aware of.
NeilanHOST
27:02
It's not like we weren't thinking about stuff like Gloomhaven and Spirit Island, but in my case at least, I knew that it wasn't going to get very far.
NeilanHOST
27:11
But other stuff that I do think that would've been lovely to see on here, Clans of Caledonia, I love that game.
NeilanHOST
27:15
Sol: Last Days of a Star.
BeckyGUEST
36:47
No, I'm joking.
BeckyGUEST
36:48
Spirit Island is
JPHOST

heavy
BeckyGUEST
36:50
for me.

10 MINS LATER

BeckyGUEST
46:32
If you can't do your particular route or whatever, yes, of course, some of it is balanced by are you a greedy person? Do you take more destinations when you shouldn't? But I think anything with a potential failure and irreversible sort of root not roots but irreversible choices but no absolutely nothing i can do now will make any difference that can feel quite quite crushing
speaker_2UNKNOWN
46:56
yeah
BeckyGUEST
46:57
i think i'm just trying to think and spirit island definitely isn't a gateway game so no i'm just thinking that that looks very pretty and very colorful it's it it would it could look it could deceive you by thinking it's quite simplistic because it looks very patchworky i think yeah and and it definitely isn't um
JPHOST
47:17
Hmm, other
