Captain Harlock

So at least for those who are disciplined-

Captain Harlock

... with the endings, at least y'all had 'em.

Got you.

Captain Harlock.

I mean-

Yeah

I knew, uh, Star Blazers had, like, a retelling of the story twice, so I don't count it too much.

This is basically the brainchild of two twin creators.

Part of the reason I chose this is because we've been talking so much about Leiji Matsumoto, Galaxy Express 999, and Captain Harlock.

We'll talk about him more in a second.

And also Yoshinobu Nishizaki.

the states back in 1985 they basically redubbed it and called it warriors of the wind and so they essentially had to go through and not only edit the dialogue as well for the localization in the film they also cut 22 minutes of the entire film to make it a simpler fast-paced children's action movie so there was just no real substance or nuance to the majority of the conflicts that were happening inside of the story and that was kind of the last time that miyazaki basically went through and worked with the Weinstein brothers because it was just the best thing that he could do as he was most notably upset for when they saw the distributed copy of Warriors of the Wind they ended up sending Harvey Weinstein a samurai sword a katana to his office and it only had two words no cuts which definitely took a while for them to go back and have the opportunity to localized many of these other films down the road, but we kind of didn't see anything like that until the 90s.

But you also ended up getting stuff like Captain Harlock, Christian Television ended up getting a couple of things like World Masterpiece Theater, The Flying House, and The Swiss Family of Robson Flora.

It was, I don't know, it was a really interesting time to go through and see where the majority of these shows would go.

Because for me, there was a gap.

This is like space piracy with a very much like Moby Dick theme.

After that, we have the iconic Captain Harlock.

Yes.

I think Captain Harlock kind of sucks.

I mean, he does.

I do like the rest of his crew and he's got a cool spaceship.

Sailor Moon's like, but you didn't do anything.

You're just away.

Yeah, but these days, I think he's best known for kind of pushing anime into its mature phase.

So he created Galaxy Express, which is what this is the most direct reference to Captain Harlock.

this is more Harlock than Galaxy.

I

Like, less Yamato, but all the other stuff kind of touches each other.

And even, like, the recent CGI Harlock movie is sick as hell.

Because Captain Harlock is one of the coolest characters.

If you want to just grab a glass of, like, the, like, bourbon-strengthened red wine... that they sell sometimes you know like get one of the like fortified red wines and just sit down with your goblet like this swirl it around and just watch harlock the old you know the old 70s tv show you're gonna have a good time every time i promise you i promise you But yes, so I love Leiji Matsumoto and my intro to his world was this because I loved Daft Punk because I was a young teenager on the internet and finding out what music was.
