So they released a white paper that detailed how they were able to use their RF sensing satellites that are deployed with the intention of doing RF sensing for the ground, but using them to track satellites.
Harrison LambertHOST
31:14
So this is space domain awareness, but they're using radio frequency signal detection rather than using images, which is what everybody's doing right now.
Harrison LambertHOST
31:23
This is notable for a few reasons.
Harrison LambertHOST
31:24
One is that these satellites were not originally intended to do space domain awareness.
Harrison LambertHOST
31:28
Uh, it reminds me a lot of Vantor, how they deployed WorldView to do Earth imaging, but they were able to repurpose it for space-to-space imaging, and they were doing that before this was a demand, and now they're, they're seeing the fruits of that effort.
Harrison LambertHOST
31:41
HawkEye, much the same way.
Harrison LambertHOST
32:34
There's a lot of noise from all these satellites talking and from the Earth talking that you have to pick out, and so having that signal processing capability is pretty advanced, and then being able to use that to actually find a location and keep track of it as it's moving really fast is a really tricky problem to solve, and it's probably why it took them two years to do it.
Harrison LambertHOST
32:51
They did it on a pretty shoestring budget, $1.2 million, so it really was like a research project.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
5:15
So it's been kind of a wild ride, but it really landed nicely with how BlueStack was up and coming.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
5:22
I was out at the National Space Defense Center in 2018 trying to figure out how to do a new contract for space domain awareness.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
5:31
At the time, commercial data was really new in the picture, and what we realized is that there was no easy way to bring commercial data into the government picture.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
5:41
BlueStack was bringing a capability to the table and they said, you don't need commercial data.

However, when you look at the complexity of the different orbits, the different entities, and the different operators that are bringing things to space, there really isn't a common place to call to say, hey, what's going to happen? So when you look above your head at an airplane flying over, you know that the FAA is managing space.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
34:00
When you do the same thing in space, it's not that easy.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
34:04
The Department of Defense has ownership for the Protect and Defend mission, but the Department of Commerce has responsibility for the Space Domain Awareness mission, and those two interact quite a bit.
Geoffrey CarriganGUEST
34:17
so what bluestack built with the unified data library was a data layer that allowed information to come in at every different classification level from unclassified to secret top secret and beyond and then fuse that information together so if i have a person who has a camera in his backyard in black forest true story aims that camera up in space, takes a picture.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
2:04
And essentially, what does this mean? Um, it means that if you're building a satellite that might cost you hundreds of millions to get like a very big telescope on it, you can now use a camera and a satellite that might cost you a couple million and effectively reach the same resolution, um, by saving hundreds of millions of dollars by just using this camera with a small lens.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
2:27
So that is very useful for obviously, uh, when you're looking up into space, so astronomy, space domain awareness.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
2:35
If you're looking for objects in, uh, LEO or in, sorry, low Earth orbit or in GEO, um, then you would need to have, um, you want to classify them and not just pick up a little signal like with radar, then you would wanna have a high resolution camera to do that.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
2:52
Um, it's also useful if you're looking down.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
2:54
So when you're doing, um, reconnaissance missions, for example, or Earth observation in general, then you would want to have obviously a high resolution imaging, um, that improves, um, what you can actually detect with a small satellite or even with a large satellite seeing even smaller things from, uh, LEO.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
3:15
Um, now in the air, this is not just interesting for space.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
3:19
Today, we have the focus on space domain awareness, looking up, uh, basically from the ground and space-based space domain awareness.
Johannes GalatsanosGUEST
3:27
Um, but in the future, obviously it's a camera.
Aidan DaoussisHOST
16:45
Maybe you can explain the question after I ask it and answer it so people can get a sense of what I'm talking about.
Aidan DaoussisHOST
16:51
Is Benchmark Space responsible for changing the name Space Situational Awareness to Space Domain Awareness?
Wesley GroveGUEST
17:02
I don't think so.
Wesley GroveGUEST
17:03
I haven't heard that.
Wesley GroveGUEST
17:12
carrot in our cap, I guess.
Aidan DaoussisHOST
17:15
Yeah, we would call it SSA, Space Situational Awareness, for so long where you're just kind of aware of things that are around you and floating near satellites, whether it's debris or other satellites.
Aidan DaoussisHOST
17:28
And now it's Space Domain Awareness.
Aidan DaoussisHOST
17:31
And you have to just have control of your domain zone.
speaker_1HOST
21:32
It's a really great question.
speaker_1HOST
21:33
And it comes down to the severe limitations of what military experts call Space Situational Awareness, or SSA.
speaker_0HOST
21:40
Okay, explain that.
speaker_1HOST
21:41
Yes.

It can also reduce latency in data reception and facilitate data distribution.
speaker_0NARRATOR
3:49
Furthermore, integrating them with other systems could contribute to Space Situational Awareness, or SSA, and expand capabilities for tracking space objects.

3:59
Recently, U.S. Secretary of the Air Force, Troy Monk, confirmed that the United States has space control weapons deployed in space.
speaker_0NARRATOR
4:07
This is an example of the trend toward the militarization of space, an area in which China and Russia have also demonstrated capabilities.
