So you can't really get away from, you know, you can't afford to be in your silo too much because these are the people that you depend on so i think um you know an underlying understanding of what is it that connects us is is so important um i mean how deep do you want to get into this al because because like we like you know like okay we've got to fix the algorithm

that work is happening and i think we all know the effect of outrage culture that you know we are all being wound up in our silos and there is great work happening on how to fix that at a macro level yes work around the algorithm is great get people out of those the digital um the digital echo chambers and into actually collaborating cooperating with each other on the ground as part of community the way that we did it here in the southern highlands was actually bringing people together around shared aspirations and say, what is it that we want for our community? What are the needs and aspirations of our place? And do you know what? No one's one need or aspiration is any more important than anyone else's.

And so where you normally have, you know, climate person or the food person or the vegan person or the meat eater.

Everyone knows the name Mary Poppins, but what some people might not realise is the creator of that memorable character was Australian-born author P.L. Travers, whose real name was Helen Lyndon Goff.

And like a few of our other literary heroes whose statues are scattered around the country, The Mary Poppins author has a monument in the New South Wales Southern Highlands town of Barrel where she spent many of her formative years.

And the five metre bronze statue that graces a public park in Barrel has long had a reputation for being a bit magical itself, given that it would regularly shift position during the night.

It was eventually discovered a secretive group of volunteers had been turning the statue 180 degrees on the spring equinox and later when a turntable was helpfully installed beneath the statue a local tradition sprang forth that sees the area's school children crank the turntable and turn dear old Mary Poppins around to mark the changing of the seasons.
