Ricky McAulay – UK Operations Director at Royal Mail (#35)

24:26Ricky McAulayGUEST
Particularly if you spend too much time in a head office, that is a major risk that you lose touch with just reality and what's the temperature and how people are.
R
24:37Ricky McAulayGUEST
how people are feeling and just this week I've been out in a big delivery office out in Southend down in England I'm trying to get into a unit every week and that's just walking the floor speaking to the people so there's some sense of checking what we're talking about when you're sitting in a head office meeting again that's just not the reality or it is the reality and we're making progress I think you know we've got we've got an opportunity now as we go through this big transformation which is the change to the universal service or rather than letters six days a week the bulk of letters will be Monday Wednesday Friday one week next week Tuesday Thursday that's a massive reset
G
25:19Gayle LloydHOST
Is that a complete reset for you guys? It is
R
25:22Ricky McAulayGUEST
and we've got to take it as the opportunity to get pride back into the people that are out there every day because I mean they're an incredible job during the pandemic where parcel volumes surged massively in every part of the world letter volumes being in terminal decline, 6, 7, 8%, sometimes 10% a year.

When I started in Southend-on-Sea, I remember my nurse, who was also the receptionist, used to say that, oh, the patient, they looked happy inside, but outside they were asking me how old you are and do you have any experience? I'm like, I'm not that young.

Now you're gonna tell us about the most significant other planning news stories from the past week.
J
21:25John GaganHOST
So what's been happening?
A
21:27Alex KingGUEST
First up, Southend-on-Sea City Council's planning committee has refused permission for a 2,000-home scheme on Greenbelt land against the advice of the authority's planning officers on the grounds that it would be inappropriate development.
A
21:40Alex KingGUEST
In other news, an inspector has ordered Warwick District Council to pay a developer's partial appeal costs after allowing plans to build 140 homes on safeguarded land that were refused against officer advice, finding that the authority's planning committee had provided limited reasoning and failed to explain how or why the proposal would prejudice safeguarded land.

C

Um, but then, you know, going back to the sort of skateboarding analogy of kind of like having a kind of understanding of football and, you know, as we travel around and, you know, hopefully visit more grounds together and things like that and, and see how kind of exciting the game can be at kind of lower and, and, and grassroots levels, you know.
C
50:50Charlie HoodGUEST
Um, and, you know, play- I think playing for a club is a, is, is, is a really important way of kind of having that kind of broader understanding of not just like the Premier League isn't, isn't the be-all and end-all, you know.
C
51:02Charlie HoodGUEST
Uh, I wrote a piece in, in, in, in, in our newsletter last week about my experience playing for a, playing for my old, old team in Southend as a kid, you know.
C
51:10Charlie HoodGUEST
Um, and I think that, that, that, that, that gives you a really nice kind of, um, kind of, um, context for the game, you know, um, and how it's sort of played so broadly and, you know, you can sort of strike up a conversation with anyone, can't you, if you're, if you're, if you're both football fans or you're both wearing shirts and you've got a, a deeper, uh, uh, not deeper understanding, um, I don't want to sort of discredit anyone who do follow this kind of Premier League football or anything, but, you know, I think it's a, it's a nice icebreaker, isn't it?
