South–South cooperation

Over the weekend, the United Nations marked its day for South-South cooperation.

This year’s commemoration took the form of a two-day seminar in Hangzhou, one of China’s key technology hubs.

The event brought together participants to explore new ways to advance solidarity among countries of the Global South.

Handshakes that strengthen ties and build a shared future through South-South cooperation.

Around 100 participants, including government officials, representatives from United Nations agencies, and academics, shared practical insights on how countries in the Global South can work together to enhance South-South cooperation.

UNDP has worked very closely with the Chinese government, uh, under the Global Development Initiative, particularly implementing projects under the Global Development South-South Cooperation Fund.

And that is one of the points in which we want to develop with India.

You're talking of South-South cooperation and you're trying to see how the South can get together.

Do you think in today's world leading by example and South-South cooperation can bring worrying factors, different positions to the table?

I say that the Global South is a very complex scenario but in the Global South There are many actors that need to play.

Like I explained to you, we chair G77, so 134 more China countries.

And this will set example not only for Asia, also for other Arab countries and the African countries, Latin American countries, how successful cooperation between the old civilizations, two nations, very strong nations also, and the stability, how can grow and make fruitful results for the two countries.

And this will encourage other South-South cooperation in the future.

I'm very optimistic about the outcomes of this visit.

Then, Professor, we know Egypt is a major hub connecting the Arab world and Africa and also beyond.

So I think us thinking in a different way from a not only community orientation to supporting and engaging elites to do well, I think is exceedingly important.

There's also in a geometry term, probably something more that should happen between South-South collaborations.

both regional organizations, but also, you know, groups of people who've been successful in different environments, in attracting investment, in using technology and government, in building government capacity that I think right now are still pretty north-south interactions where there's northern organizations that say they know how to do these things or are capital holders rather than groups of southern places coming together.

But I think we have shied away from supporting people who have resources and power.

I think the orientation from advanced economies and the development community should be that we can't substitute for your local capacity.

We are only here to catalyze it.

What's the right way that we can do that? Money, talent, diaspora, exchanges, South-South, new coalitions.

But we are not here to replace you.

However, relentless global instability and changing geopolitical landscapes have exposed the critical flaws of these imported strategies or let me say blueprints leaving developing nations dangerously vulnerable to economic shocks they did not create or which is not their own making to fix this forward-thinking leaders futurists and concerned citizens of africa and Asia are breaking old dependencies and looking inward, a shift championed by historic milestones like Africa's unified 54-nation African Continental Free Trade Area.

By prioritizing South-South cooperation and homegrown innovation, both continents are finally designing policies tailored to their actual community needs rather than foreign expectations.

The developed world has continuously been promising some hundred billion to the developing world, which remains as a mirage.

Now Africa, or the developing part of the world, When there is a South-South cooperation, we stand to benefit some 300 billion dollars.

How will Ghana buy into this concept of climate finance? And what do you intend to be remembered of as the Minister of Environment who left a good print in terms of government and Africa's ability to buy into this concept? And not just buy into it, where we will not just be spectators, but we will practically benefit from this concept.

Under the agreement, the developed countries were meant to provide a fund that was to support the climate-vulnerable countries, of which Ghana is one.

However, that has not been forthcoming.

I think, like you mentioned, South-South cooperation is key.

As a country, we need to look at strategic partners who perhaps share similar problems but may have different advantages and then perhaps leverage on that.

The BRICS project by itself is very limited.

It's basically a trade project to increase South-South trade.

It shouldn't be exaggerated.

That's the limit.
