Southern Siberia, 2010 In the remote Altai Mountains, at an elevation of over 14,000 feet, archaeologists discover a pinky bone of an ancient humanoid species that dates back 40,000 years.

Translating to Beyond Lake Baikal, frankly, searching for postings further away from Europe could be pretty challenging.

Located at the Russian-Mongolian-Chinese border in South Siberia, Roman served as an officer among the Amur Cossacks for the next five years.

Having a notoriously short temper, he engaged in at least one duel during this time.

He thrived there though, and for the rest of his life he would both feel a connection with the Cossacks and with the Siberian and Mongolian regions.

They're particularly famous for their carved stone monuments, called deer stones, that feature extraordinary depictions of people and animals, and deer in particular.

More than 1,500 of these stones have been found, mostly in Mongolia and neighboring South Siberia.

Toward the end of the 2nd millennium BC, a new wave of Indo-European speakers moved east into the Altai.

These were one branch of the Andronovo people, an extraordinarily widespread archaeological culture who almost certainly spoke Proto-Iranian, the ancestor of later languages like Pashto, Persian, and Kurdish.
