Source-Connect

I started working a lot in commercial stuff initially.

I remember my first commercial job, I freaked out sort of because – I had a home studio and I'd never used Source Connect before.

And thankfully, I literally phoned a friend and I was like, I don't know how to use this program.

I have a job tomorrow.

What am I doing? And they connected me on Source Connect.

I'm like, oh, it's that easy? That's it? That's it? And they're like, yeah.

And I was like, oh, okay, great.

The days of going to the rooms and stuff are pretty much over.

It happens, but it's all on Source Connect or Zoom.

I'd say about 90%,

not even 90%, I'd say like 99% of my auditions are self-tapes.

So we all have home studios.

We all have Source Connect.

We're all, well, we're not all full-time, but we all can offer quick turnaround.

There's so many things that all of us bring to the table that are very much the same.

So, for example, I just recorded actually an episode with Ryan Bennis, and he was talking about how one of the directions that comes up for him a lot is authoritative.

He really seems to do well when the authoritative read comes up.

So my point was, OK, well, when you're reaching out to these people, don't just tell them that you're a full time professional voice actor with the Source Connect home studio and whatever, like everybody else is telling them.

Mention the fact that you, by the way, I really do really nail the authoritative read because now they've made an association.

And so, like, you know, Big Nate was a great example.

I was telling you, we, we did three years of a TV show from our, our bedroom closets riffing, improvising with each other over Source-Connect and Zoom.

Um, not ideal I'm, you know, I'm an improviser.

I wanna riff, I wanna yes and with people, I wanna be in the same room.

It was so funny too, because I think it was Lucy in Houston who was basically like, "Can we just use Source-Connect?" And they were like, "Oh."

Stop.

[laughs] Yeah.

Are you serious?

Yeah.

Were we not using Source-Connect?

No.

Six years now developing her and working on her as the film development progressed as well, all the way from storyboard, as a storyboard voice, a scratch voice, to final finished product.

And I also got the opportunity to audition for her in Czech, um, but, uh, they ended up going with someone else, but that's okay, 'cause they didn't [laughs] wanna fly me out, which is, which is fair enough, and they didn't quite understand the, uh, existence of Zoom or Source Connect.

[laughs] So oh well, you know.

But, um, you know, I'm very fortunate and lucky to be her, her English voice, and I adore, adore, I adore that spoiled brat so much.

It took a little time to get used to all of that.

And then learning different softwares like Audacity, and then also biting the bullet and getting a license for Source-Connect, which is, was the key in the beginning, how to connect a sound engineer from somewhere and a client from somewhere else.

And you can have 10 people on a call sometimes.

But now you can roll out of bed and record a session.

In the beginning you feel it's very, it was very lonely in the voice booth, I have to say.

But you get used to everything.

And often now through Source-Connect you chat a little bit before and after the session, but there's a beautiful human element, and now it's just me and the microphone, and then you send off the job into the ether.

It's a different story now.
